I'm very new to genealogy and because I have very few living relatives I'm already struggling a bit with my father's side of the family. His name was Samuel OAKES (DoB 29 Nov 1922) who lived from being very young at Craghead. I'm not sure where he was actually born. His only sibling was Thomas Dinning OAKES (5 Nov 1921)
My grandfather and grandmother are where I'm already stuck. My grandfather was also Samuel OAKES believed to have been born in 1900 or 1901 in Pelton or Pelton Fell. I have no other information at all regarding siblings etc. He did however work in the offices of Craghead Colliery up until he retired.
My grandmother was Margaret DINNING (DoB 21 Jun 1901). Her siblings that I'm aware of were Jasper, Annie, Jane (AKA Jenny) and Hannah (AKA Nancy). I've absolutely no idea where she was born but it was reasonably local because she told me about walking to work in Chester-le-Street as a young girl.
Any lead to point me in the right direction would be fantastic

Hi John
At this stage you really do need your grandparents' birth certificates so that you can find our who their parents are and go further back.
This looks like your grandmother's birth:
Dinning Margaret Sep qtr 1901 Chester le Street vol 10a page 593
If she was born on 21 June it is likely that the birth wasn't registered until July so she would not have appeared in the indexes until the Jul/Aug/Sep quarter

1901 census has a Samuel Oakes b.1899 Urpeth,Durham. In 1911 he is shown as b.1900 Houston. Both of these places are only a few miles apart and very close to Pelton,so would assume this is him
1901 census ref is RG13 Piece 4700 Folio 99 Page 32

This looks like your grandfather's birth. There are no other births around the time frame for a Samuel Oakes in Durham:
Oakes Samuel June qtr 1899 Chester le Street vol 10a page 580

I would start with your grandparents wedding certificate as that should name their respective fathers, which would in turn confirm that the 1901 census reference that pattenwalsh has provided is the correct family and also help you to find your grandmother in the 1911 census.
June quarter 1920, Samuel OAKES and Margaret DINNING, Chester-le Street registration district, volume 10a, page 1621
If you have not ordered certificate copies before, they may be obtained for the princely sum of £9.25 each from the GRO. Click here to take you through to their ordering service.
