It helps to find the distribution of a surname, information on similar surnames which can help with the variations we have to contend with, the most common surnames and surname meanings.

It also lists approximately how many people with the surname in the 1881 census, how many currently have the surname, how many in the US and how many in Australia.

One of my names has 53 entries in 1881 and another has 3,576. On a quiet night I may try and track the 53 of the former name but I don't think I will bother with the latter name.
