Default Richard Adcock - Waterloo wreck 1842

    Hi All

Greetings from Australia. I am researching one John CLIFFORD, convict and survivor of the wreck of the Waterloo(2) at the Cape of Good Hope in 1842.

I am also researching one of his ship mates, Richard ADCOCK, a fellow convict that sadly drowned in the wreck. I am hoping to make contact with ADCOCK direct descendants in the United Kingdom.

I have been provided with the following information concerning Richard ADCOCK, hopefully a board member will be able to comfirm that it is the same man:

I looked on Ancestry at the criminal registers and there was a Richard ADCOCK convicted of stealing in January 1841 in Lincoln, but I have no idea if this is the right one. If it is, then there is also the image of a record from the prison hulk 'Fortitude' which states a Richard ADCOCK, convisted of stealing from a shop in Lincoln on 14 January 1841, was received on the hulk on 4th December 1841. He was aged 37.
I hope to hear from you all soon.

    Regards
    John

    Hi John,
For a few details about Richard Adcock start here.
Note his birthplace - though I'll leave it to you to prove the truth of it. (If you want, a mod can move this thread, either now or later, to the Hampshire forum. Our mods are very helpful. )

There is a document reference and if you contact Lincolnshire Archives http://www.
    lincolnshire.gov.uk/residents/archives?tab=contacts
and quote it, they will tell you how much it will cost to obtain a copy. Not sure about postage as you live in Australia, and also although there are links at the side of the page to 'ordering from Archives' and 'how much will it cost', what is the difference between copying services and
    reproduction fees?

The Fortitude hulk register on Ancestry also notes that Richard Adcock was Received from the John Brewer 4th December 1841. The two convicts listed before him had also come from the John Brewer, one on 26th November and the other on 27th November.

The John Brewer was, it appears, another convict transport ship. Indeed, the list of convicts on the John Brewer (voyage date 1 December 1841) includes
Richard Adcock, convicted at Lincoln City Quarter Sessions on 14 January 1841, sentenced to seven years' transportation.
(from Ancestry's 'Australian Convict Transportation Registers - Other Fleets & Ships')

So for some reason, Richard Adcock must have been taken off the John Brewer and put on the Fortitude hulk, where he would stay for five months before being put on another transport ship, the Waterloo.

I was hoping to find him on the 1841 census to get another estimate of his age (since the criminal registers and hulk register disagree about his age). Presumably he was either in prison or on a hulk. So far I've not found him though.

Our members are extremely helpful too I will leave this where it is for now, as our super sleuths will see it in New Posts anyway, but if a link to Hampshire is proved, John, then send me a Private Message and I can move this thread to the Hampshire Forum for you.

To avoid any duplication of effort there is a great deal of information on the ill fated Waterloo Convict Ship on this thread, but I have asked John to start a separate thread on Richard Adcock's early life here.
