my great-great grandfather Frederick Vetter was a well-known orchestral music director/musician/music professor in the Manchester region. he travelled to Canada at age 76 in 1919 to live with his son Charles who had immigrated there years earlier. he died in Toronto in 1920. i was wondering if there is a possibility there could be an obituary for him in Manchester, as there doesn't seem to be one in Toronto. it seems strange that one wouldn't exist as he was very well-known in the Manchester area. how could i find out if an obit exists?

Hi Hilary
The local daily newspaper for Manchester was / is the Manchester Evening News. It is a daily newspaper and covers a wide area. I believe it is now available on line - see recent thread about newspapers online - but it may only be available up to a certain year.
I'm sure you will get other replies.

Manchester Evening News only available from 1875 to 1903 online at the moment.Have searched Britishnewspaperarchive with no luck, apart from some reports on musical band contests etc.

thanks i had seen the first link. the second one isnt working for me, could you repost? i had indeed searched for him on britishnewspaperarchives.com and saw the numerous references made to him as playing at social events, etc. it is because he seems to have been so (relatively) well-known that i was hoping to find an obit! actually, i wanted to learn more about his parents, and was hoping an obituary would make some mention of them or provide other useful info. he was quite the mysterious man, as were his parents!
