Default FRANKLIN - born Sherfield on Loddon

    Hi

George Franklin was born in Sherfield on Loddon, Hampshire. He was the son of David Franklin and Patience Wicks (Wix) and a brother of my great grandfather (also David Franklin).

I am trying to prove that George moved to the Midlands of England and is the George Franklin that appears in the 1881 census at Lenton, Nottinghamshire, in the 1891 census at Radford, Nottinghamshire and the 1901 census at Widmore, Lincolnshire.

The census entries from 1861 - 1901 are as follows -

    1861
Age 5 - living with his parents David Franklin & Patience Wicks (Wix) at Temple Lands, Sherfield upon Loddon, Hampshire

    1871
Age 17 - a servant living with the Ilsley family at Brickiln Farm, Sherbourne St John, Hampshire

    1881
Age 28 - a general labourer living at 20 Beaconsfoeld Terrace, Lenton, Nottinghamshire with his wife Emma (38)and children Harriet M (10), William (6), George (3) and James (a baby)

    1891
Age 38 - a greengrocer & fishmonger living at 19 Chapel Street, Radford, Nottinghamshire with his wife Emma Katharine (48)and children George Hy Robt (13) and Mabel Ellen (1). Emma's mother Jane Churchward (84) was also living with the family.

    1901
Age 46 - a blacksmith living in Wimore, Lincolnshire with his wife Emma (57) and daughter Mabel E (11). A servant Charles Ponton (age12) was also living with the family.

The place of birth varies for George in each census, but are all shown as in Hampshire -

    1861 - Sherfield
    1871 - Basing
    1881 - Basingstoke
    1891 - Cuffield
1901 - Stafield (I can find no such place)

Despite the wide variance in occupations, I am sure that we have the same George in 1981. 1891 and 1901 as the family matches up.

But is it the same George who was the son of David Franklin & Patience Wicks (Wix)?

I am tempted to think it is because, in 1881 and 1891, his parents David & Patience were living at Cufaud(s) in the Civil Parish of Basing, Hampshire. This is much the same as the birthplace given by George in 1891.

I would love to hear from anyone researching George's branch of the Franklin family so that we can compare notes.

I think that Statfield should probably be Stratfield [the place Stratfield Saye (seat of the Duke of Wellington) is very near Sherfield on Loddon] .

    Hope this helps.

    Default Franklin

    Hi Bob

    Thanks very much.

I was well aware of the proximity of Stratfield Saye, but didn't think of it - shows what a fresh set of eyes does !!

The more I find out the more I am sure this is my man.

    Hello Rosey,

This may be something and nothing but I have just found a John ILLSLEY marrying an Elizabeth FRANKLYN in the Winchester area in March 1839. This John ILLSLEY may well be related to my ILLSLEYs, several of whom were born in Kingsworthy, Hampshire which is only a hanful of miles from Winchester.

If you think there might be something in this I would love to hear back from you.

Hello Robertabix and welcome to the forum.
Rosey last posted on the forum in 2005, some time ago but... she is still a member and your post may well bring her back.
    I hope so.

You can always start a new thread requesting information regarding any problems you have locating your Illsley family. We have some very good researchers on the forum. Good Luck.
