Don't know if we're on the right track here, but:

Henry Appleton married Priscilla Hoyle at Silkstone on 21 Mar 1831. Both signed, but Henry signed as 'Henry Poppleton'.

But it seems unlikely that this couple would have had a daughter some 30 years after they married. Perhaps Mary Ann was the daughter of Henry (junior) or the granddaughter of Henry (senior)? I'm struggling to find any of the sons of Henry (Henry, George or Alfred) in the later census at the moment.

and Sarah HOYLE married Thomas GIBSON at Silkstone on 11th July 1831. She was probably the daughter of Joseph HOYLE & Mary YOULE who was christened at Silkstone on 17th January 1811. Priscilla HOYLE (same parents) was also christened at Silkstone on 26th September 1813

That all fits together then ...

I can find the following children for Henry and Priscilla:
Amelia born abt 1831 Barnsley - married John Turner Oct - Dec 1851 Barnsley
Joseph born abt 1836 Barnsley - married Sarah Ann Graham Sept 1856 Royston
Henry born abt 1844 Monk Bretton: more on him below
Priscilla born abt 1846? - married William Peaker Aug 1857 Royston
    Alfred born abt 1851 - dies Jan - Mar 1867 (aged 15) Barnsley vol 9c p 116
    George born abt 1857: dies Jan - Mar 1867 (aged 11) Barnsley vol 9c p 116

There's an interesting record for the marriage of Henry Poppleton to Anne Shooter Jul - Sept 1864 Barnsley vol 9c p 159 on FreeBMD, but no sign of them in 1871 census so far.

I'm really drawn by the following baptism record:

Mary Ann (Jagger?) Shooter d/o Ann Shooter, singlewoman, baptised Monk Bretton 18 Jan 1863 (no birth date shown)

Thank you all for your help. So it could be another case of name changing which seems to happen a lot with the Poppleton / Gillott family. It is all very confusing.

Perhaps you may consider ordering the Henry Poppleton/Anne Shooter marriage certificate, or perhaps you could get to the a records office to search for the marriage there? Barnsley area records are held at the various West Yorkshire Archive Service locations and some copies of parishes are at Sheffield Archives.

Please can you tell me Liz where you got the information that Henry Appleton signed under the name of Henry Poppleton.

The marriage for Henry Appleton and Priscilla Hoyle is in Ancestry's 'West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns 1813 - 1921' collection (original data: West Yorkshire Archive Service) and the baptism for Mary Ann (Jagger?) Shooter is in Ancestry's 'West Yorkshire, England, Births and Baptisms 1813 - 1906' collection (original data: West Yorkshire Archive Service).

On the marriage record, it's not a problem with the transcription; the vicar's original entry shows 'Appleton' and Henry has signed 'Poppleton'.

This may be going off in a bit of a tangent (the reason for the suggestion being Mary Ann Jagger Shooter's middle name):

    1871: Class: RG10; Piece: 4651; Folio: 43; Page: 23
    Taylor Row, Worsborough (Barnsley district)
JAGGER, Robert, head, widower, age 74?, retired labourer, Yorkshire Criggleston (sic)
JAGGER, Mary Ann, grndau, age 9, Yorkshire Monk Britton (sic)
JAGGER, Frederick, head lodger, age 24, coal miner, Yorkshire Worsbrough (sic)
JAGGER, Ruth, wife, age 24, Derby
JAGGER, Elizabeth, dau, age 4m, Yorkshire Worsbrough (sic)

Perhaps Henry Poppleton was Mary Ann's step-father, having married Ann Shooter? Frederick Jagger seems to be the grandson of Robert Jagger, if you delve back in the census. Perhaps the Poppleton/Shooter marriage will help sort this all out!
