Hi just wondering if anyone can help me get to the bottom of my Brick wall. The person in question is John Lowe esq who married Mary ann Mayor daughter of the Rev John Mayor & Ann Hollings.
My search has found in Gentlemans Magazine under Warickshire the announcement of the couples pending wedding and that they both appear to be from Shropshire,John Lowe listed as from Shawbury Park, which I think is on the border for Warickshire?
I cannot find John's Parents ? However I did find some data relating to bussiness deals after he was married with a brother William Lowe in Bridgeford Mills Salford and of Manchester, millers & cornfactors. They went Bankrupt? in 1824 and through a letter I obtained which John Mayor wrote to his brother telling him of his family affliction,my daughter mary Lowe resides in Manchester with 5 small children, her husband suddenly left her with 4 small children`the begining of Jan last she was expecting her 5th in May and took place 28th May 1824.The husband failed as aFarmer of a large concern at Shawbury Park. After this I set him up at amill near shifnalthen entered partnership with his brother. He said they were unable to meet creditors,& took off to Ireland Then to America. They had quite a colourful time! Poor Wives. Thankyou Lynd

Lowe/Mayor marr 3/11/1814 Shawbury,Shropshire
"John Lowe listed as from Shawbury Park, which I think is on the border for Warwickshire?"
As far as I am aware the only place called 'Shawbury Park' in the UK is a farm about half a mile south of the village of Shawbury in Shropshire. This is no where near Warwickshire and in fact is about 50 miles away.

Further to the above I see that the Family Search (IGI) web site confirms that this couple married at Shawbury, Shropshire on 3 Nov 1814. You need to view the original marriage register entry which should tell you the parish of residence of both the bride and groom although this can sometimes just be entered as the local parish providing they have both been living there for a short time. The usual tradition is for the marriage to take place in the home parish of the bride, but this is not always the case.

Hi Lynn
If you google Rev John Mayor 1755 it comes up with info on Mary Ann's side of family (she was born 25 apr 1792 + christ. 25 jun 1792 Shawbury, Shrops).. but only mentions 'married to John Lowe'
Not found John's parents yet but as Mary Ann born 1792 assume John to be of similar age??
Law Advertiser Vol 9 (google) reads: "John Lowe late of 53 Piccadilly, Middlesex out of business - in Fleet Prison" No date on that page, but could that be the reason John suddenly left Mary with the children in 1824?
Parishmouse has info on Shropshire/Glous. along with other counties, where you can search (free!) parish registers, gazetteers and directories so that might be worth a try.

Found the following:
27 Dec 1823
Lowe John and William, Bridgford Mills, Salford and of Manchester, millers and cornfactors at the Union Hotel Newport (assume Shropshire) first and final div. 9 Jan 1824..plus a few lines under Bankrupts in a London Review dated Jan 1823 to June 1824
so possibly the timescale would fit with John's disappearing act!

"Bridgford Mills, Salford"
The various newspaper reports I've seen about the Bankruptcy refer to "Bridgford Mills, Stafford"
The Examiner 4 Jan 1824 - "Sunday 4 January, J and W Lowe, Bridgford Mills, Stafford. Solicitors Benbow & Co Lincoln's Inn"
Staffordshire Advertiser 21 Jan 1832 ".... John and William Lowe, late of Bridgford Mills, in the County of Stafford, and of Manchester, in the County of Lancaster, Millers, Cornfactors, Dealers, Chapmen and Copartners ..........".

I can't see Bridgford Mills or even Bridgford / Bridgeford listed in Staffordshire on a modern gazetteer so it is not going to be easy to find the location. It may be a good idea to start a new thread on the Staffordshire part of this forum in the hope that someone there recognises the place name.

Please don't start a new thread on the Staffordshire forum! It's best to keep all the information together in one place. Instead, this thread can be moved by a Moderator to the Staffordshire forum, if lynd would like that.
