Hi,
I'm thinking of applying to the 'Find a Grenadier Ancestor' service, but I'd like to know if anyone else has done this, and what kind of info they received. I know my ancestor's full name (Frank Henry White), that he died of enteric on 15th April 1900 at Bloemfontein (from The Times and FMP) and that he was in the 3rd Grenadier Guards (no 4528, L Sgt- I have a letter saying this bit).
My question is: what extra info am I likely to receive if I spend £30 on applying to this service?
Thanks for any help,
Paula

I confess that prior to your post I had never heard of this facility before so I checked to see where you had seen it. For the benefit of others it appears on the Grenadier Guards official website:

I can't answer your question on the usefulness of any records they hold, Paula, but have you found his actual service record on FMP or was this just an entry in the death indices? Perhaps if you give us a little more information such as his year and place of birth and his rank at the time of his death someone could take a look to see if there is more information available.

I wrote to the Regimental HQ Grenadier Guards a few years ago just to ask about the service of a ggrandfather. The sent me copies of his full service records (which i had seen on ancestry, but large page versions so easier to read!) and requested only a donation. Also gave me other possible contacts to try: Barbara Chambers members.aol.com/bjcham2909 (pre1823) Mr McDonald: thegrenadierguards.co.uk (1939-45)
This was a few years ago so not sure how useful it will be to you.

His records won't be on FMP (at least not in WO 97) because he was in the Grenadier Guards.
The Guards contact details are in the standard National Archives research guide -
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/r...on-records.htm
This is worth reading because it makes the point that you're unlikely to find records of men who died in service in that series.
If the same applies to the Guards' records, you may be in for a disappointment but I really don't know what records the Guards may have. Is there any means of asking them about the records of men who died in service? Is the £30 refundable if they can't find anything? It would be a lot to spend for nil return!
