    Default Japhet(h) James EDWARDS

I have found this chap in the 1881 census (RG11, piece 233, folio 57, page 5) as being aged 26 and born in Holborn.

His death is recorded as being in the March quarter of 1923, Islington district, volume 1b, page 276, aged 68.

Both of these ages fit nicely with him having been born in 1854/5 - or thereabouts.

The only birth that I can find for a Japhet(h) James EDWARDS in Holborn is in the
December quarter of 1849, Holborn district, volume 2, page 137. I think that 5 years is a bit too far out.

I have found a marriage for him in the
March quarter of 1881, Hampstead district, volume 1a, page 926 – probably to Emily WINGHAM, if the 1881 census is anything to go by. This certificate will be ordered at some stage to see what the age is given on that, but in the meantime, I was wondering if any sharper eyes could find a more realistic birth reference - or even christening - for Japhet(h).

    Thank you,

I've searched under all likely variants and the only one I can come up with so far, Jan, is the 1849 registration that you already have. I will keep looking though.

Japhet James Edwards was baptised at St Andrew Holborn on 28 May 1854. Born 23rd April 1854. Parents James and Mary Ann of Eyre Street Hill. Father was a Locksmith which fits neatly with his marriage in 1881.

I see Thomasin has come to the rescue and found him. Presumably they just neglected to register the birth.

Edit: Not to forget Malcolm as well

    Thank you all!

Thomasin: the occupation of Locksmith for James (the father) fits nicely as Japhet(h) was a locksmith as well by 1881 and malcolm99, it is great to have the information confirmed. Thank you.

Also, thank you for the extra information about the marriage, malcolm99.

Graham - yes, I expect that this could well be one of those missing registrations. Tuh!
