Hi Janet - I do have a further puzzle - William Barber & Ruth Pullin had 8 children that I know of. I can account for all but 2 of them. Have tried Family Search & Ancestry but nothing seems to help. Their son William born 1823 shows up in 1841 and 1851 census and then disappears from sight, I can't find a death or marriage for him after that time. Perhaps he emigrated? Also his sister Mary, born 1836 - she shows up as far as 1861 when she is living with her brother John, but then disappears. I am wondering if she married but can't find a record apart from a marriage in Chipping Sodbury with James Leonard as a possible spouse. But she doesn't show up as his wife in later census records. Any suggestions? I wish this family history wasn't so addictive!!!!
Thanks and kind regards
Quentin

Hi Quentin,
I have found 8 baptisms on Gloucestershire FHS Baptismal Index (1813-37):
2 April 1818 Stephen John BARBER
21 June 1820 John Cullimore BARBER
28 February 1823 William BARBER
23 August 1825 Hannah BARBER
28 April 1826 Charles BARBER
26 June 1830 Anne Elizabeth BARBER
16 May 1832 Ruth Yeo BARBER
2 March 1834 Henry Yeo BARBER
No Mary, so could she have been baptised late 1837 in which case she would not appear on the Index?
Gloucestershire Burial Index shows the following burials at Wickwar:
8 August 1826 Charles BARBER, aged 5 months
7 January 1828 Susan BARBER, aged 5 days
9 May 1828 Anne BARBER, aged 3
1 August 1830 Ruth BARBER, aged 1
6 March 1834 Henry BARBER, aged 3 days
Cross referencing with the Baptismal Index, it looks as though Susan & Anne were the children of Richard & Betty BARBER, he being a Farmer in Wickwar.
I'm afraid I cannot find William BARBER after the 1851 census either. He is not on my Burial Index nor can I find him on any subsequent census records. However, there is a death registration of a William BARBER in the December qtr 1853 in Chipping Sodbury reg district (correct reg district for Wickwar) which may well be him.
There is also a marriage registration for a Mary BARBER in the June qtr 1865 at Chipping Sodbury reg district but no grooms' names are shown. However, Ancestry have made a right pig's ear of the transcription and seem to be unable to read a perfectly good image. The volume number is 6a and the page no is 363 but I am afraid I am unable to help with the name of the groom as my other hope Findmypast do not show the groom's name until 1912.
HTH anyway

Hi Janet - Thank you for the list of baptisms - I did not have record of Charles 1826 who obviously died at 5 months. Also did not have the Henry Yeo 1834 and who died at 3 days old. Do you think the Ruth who died Aug 1830 aged 1 year was born between Charles 1826 and Anne Elizabeth 1830 or perhaps she may belong to Richard & Betty? Interesting that there is no christening for Mary and another who doesn't appear is Joseph Cullimore Barber born 1828 into this family. As far as William 1823 is concerned, I think you are probably right that the death in Chipping Sodbury is him. Just a further question - if a family lived in Newington Bagpath, what would the district be for registration of death? Thank you yet again - Regards
Quentin

Newington Bagpath is in Tetbury reg district. Genuki via Brett Langston have produced a place index which shows the district that each place is in. Go to Genuki home page, click on England, scroll down to Civil Registration and click on "The Registration Districts appropriate to particular towns". Then click on "Index of Place names". I find this list invaluable.
