    Hello Happyfeet,

We happen to live in the county adjacent to Walworth County. The University of Wisconsin has an interactive plat map (1857) for Walworth. Remember, Walworth is also a town within Walworth County. If viewing this map, it is easy to see the township grid. Troy and East Troy are on the northern edge; Walworth (town of) is in the southern part. You will also notice the town of Sugar Creek sort of in the center. Another confusing thing: while most states use the term ‘township’ to denote rural political entities, Wisconsin uses the term ‘town.’ Therefore, it is not always clear when seeing the word ‘town,’ in a Wisconsin sense, if it is a small city or an area encompassing a unit of rural land. Many towns (in the sense of townships) often have a village or city within them also carrying the name of the town, which makes it all the more confusing.

Every county has a county seat where the county business (courthouse, etc.) is located. The county seat of Walworth County is Elkhorn.

This takes you to the plat map site. Please let me know if you have problems or questions. This map allows you to click on a town to see the landowners of that time.

East Troy is now a suburb of Milwaukee.

    By the way...
it may be relevant to your research to know that Wisconsin became a Territory in 1836. Wisconsin statehood was achieved in 1848, becoming the 30th State.
