Default Edmund Simons - Emigrated to Canada

Edmund Simons was born in 1888, Croydon, Royston, Hertfordshire. We know he emigrated to Canada, along with one of his brothers. He married Beatrice in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan and they had 4 children, Betty, Albert, David and Doreen.

As a result of the marriages of Edmund and Beatrice's children, there were 16 grandchildren.

Would anyone know how or where I can find any further information or trace any of the family?

Can you please clarify what you're looking for?

If you're looking for Edmund's ancestors, this thread might be better in the Hertfordshire forum.

If you're trying to trace his descendants, maybe it should be in the Canada forum.

If you're looking specifically for his emigration record, it can stay here.

No need. I have moved the thread into our Canada forum.

Passenger List for the 'Sardinian', arriving 15 May 1910 at Quebec from London, shows Edmond SIMONS aged 21, born England, a Grocer, destined for Toronto, intended occupation Farming, previously worked as a farm labourer 1901-1907, religion C of E.

Listed with him is Sidney SIMONS aged 24, a Baker, previously worked as a farm labourer 1897-1902 (other details as Edmond).

Both travelling onwards via Canadian Pacific Railway.

    Any use?

EDIT: sorry, I misread the column head re previous farm work (very small type and hard to read!).

Edmund was in Canada (Tangleflags, Saskatchewan) by 1918 when he was called up for military service. See his CEF papers here:

    collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php

He was then still single and gave his next of kin as his father Andrew Simons, Croydon P.O., near Royston, Cambridgeshire, England.

Edit: oh, I see Kerrywood has found the emigration record. Well done!

Because of privacy laws the only option you really have is looking in Canada 411 dot ca ( free telephone) listings if you have any idea what their names are and/or where they all moved to. Remember, you can't post their information on here if they are living

It is likely that he obtained land through the Dominion Land Acts of Canada, which was an 1872 to 1930 Canadian law that aimed to encourage the settlement of Canada's prairie provinces by offering immigrants that were British subjects or those who showed intention to become such, a conditional free quarter section of land. Offered was one hundred and sixty acres for free, the only cost being a ten dollar administration fee, to any male farmer who agreed to build a habitable house on his homestead, live there for 6 months each year and “prove up” the land by cultivating a specified amount of land.

There is a database available on line called the Saskatchewan Homestead Index where you can search by name and where you can order these files. They give a lot of information on the applicants. Initial search of the index I do find an Edmund Simons registered there.

Also there is the Henderson City Directories available for western Canada, some available on line, another way of tracing the family.
