    DAVIS, Edward E, visitor, 11

    Now for the 1841 census…

    1841: Piece 1420; Book: 2; Folio: 7; Page: 8; Line: 15
Abernant Y Gros Uchaf, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil
    DAVID, William 65, farmer
    DAVID, Gwenllian 65 Glamorgan
    DAVID, Daniel 30 Glamorgan
    DAVID, Catherine 25 Glamorgan
    DAVID, Gwenllian 20 Glamorgan
    BOWEN, John 30

Note the address Abernant Y Groes or Abernant Y Gros Uchaf for Daniel throughout the census. Moreover, in 1851 Llewelyn was also living at Abernant Y Gros Uchaf. From this I would be inclined to think that the father of both was William.

Further to the above, Daniel David left a will. The details from the calendar are…
Daniel David of Abern antygroes Cwmbach Aberdare Glamorgan gentleman died 6 December 1891 Probate London 7 April to Rees Walter Williams solicitor Elizabeth Theophilus spinster and William Davis station master Effects £17155 7s. 2d.
More crucially, William Thomas DAVID of Abernant y Groes Ucha, Aberdare also left a will which was proved in 1850. You can view his will online at the National Library of Wales here.

On their search from, choose Llandaf as the Diocese and type in William Thomas DAVID for the name. Scroll through the results until you find the will for William Thomas DAVID of Abernant y Groes Ucha, proved 1850.

I have not read all of this will as it is long indeed. You can see on the second page that he mentions son Daniel and David and also son Llewelyn. You may want to read further to see if you think that this is the Llewelyn in the census. If so then sadly he would have to be ruled out as your Llewelyn (son of Morgan.)

The only baptism details I have come from FreeREG and I posted the details previously (post #14), but I'll repost the details here for you...

You can view the transcriptions for yourself on FreeREG. Go here...

    www.
    freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

If you search, you will also find siblings of Morgan (son of Henry.) You will also find Henry’s marriage at St Bride’s. I could post this information for you but I think you will find it more satisfying to find the information for yourself on FreeREG. Let me know if you find it or if you have problems.

Also, here is a tip. If you search for baptisms and type in DAVID as the surname and Henry as the first name and enter a year such as 1770 +/-10, then it will pull up baptisms for all children where the father’s name is Henry. (Don't forget to select Glamorgan as the county.)

Second tip: Checking the soundex box is always useful as it will bring back results for variations of the surname as well. For example if you type in DAVIES you will get results for both DAVIES and DAVIS. Sadly you have to search separately for the surname DAVID.

It is always worth getting hold of copies of baptisms, marriages and burials entries from the original registers rather than rely on transcriptions. I doubt there will be much in the way of additional information on the baptism entries for this period, but you never know. I always ask the Glamorgan Record Office to send me photocopies. It doesn’t very cost much and they are happy to oblige if you have exact dates and places for them to work with.

Plenty for you to do and mull over, so I will leave you for the moment and we can pick this thread up again as soon as you are ready.
