    Default Merrifields to US

Charles Merrifield left Coxley, Wells, Somerset area and ended up in Montana. His father died in Coxley and his mother remarried the following qtr in 1885. He declares on the US census in 1890 that he arrived there in 1886 so maybe there's a connection between the father's death and his migration. Can't find much more than that can anyone see him anywhere between the UK 1881 & US 1890 census?

    Any help gratefully accepted.
    John

There is this Charles Merefield in 1881.(Can't find one of this spelling on FreeBMD for the 1858-1866 time span.
He has a William James Merefield 18 with him. Haven't seen that name in his Family before 1881 but may be a brother not present in earlier censuses. There is a James .
The only Charles S. Merrifield I've found in US so far was born in Wisconsin.

Where did you find him on the 1890 census? I thought that census got destroyed by fire! I can see him in William St, Walkersville in 1900 with his wife Emily and children Harry and Violet (2 other children having died) with his emigration date given as 1886. Was this the census you meant? He was a silver miner.

Montana Death Index shows Emily Merrifield died aged 86 on 7 September 1952. She outlived her son Harry, who died aged 27 on 1 June 1924. On the 1910 census Emily is the head of the household with sons Harry and James. According to Harry Merrifield's WW1 Draft Card on Ancestry his dob was 30 August 1896

I'm puzzled here.Having looked about on Familysearch, the only marriage for a Charles & Emily (where Charles is b.England) is for Charles Merrifield whose parents were EDWARD & AMELIA Merrifield,....NOT James & Jane! He married Emily Mitchell, dtr of James Mitchell & Louisa Ann Millett.

Children on 1900 census were same as those born to this couple.

Several trees on Ancestry have same as your notes above re Montana.Onkly up to 1881.
Do you have proof that this is your Man? Might he have been mixed with another along the line?

As Homer Simpson would say "Doh!" I realised from the outset that my key supposition about Charley's origins were suspect but the further I went the more I became convinced. What was my evidence - in retrospect insufficient. Why did I continue - because I believed myself, always questionable. I've now found a more likely person in Tywardreath, Cornwall with correct named parents. How/where did you find Emily Mitchell's parents? I'm obviously not looking correctly!

Well done! Back to square 2.

ALWAYS have faith in yourself, if not why bother? If one turns out not to be right, it makes the others one less to search. Sorry I didn't notice your post earlier.

Go to 'Familysearch.org'...... type in Charles Merrifield..place, Montana. year 1889-1900.
