    Default Hawker of Hardware

Looking for info on David Hughes abt 1880 named on GrdMother Elizabeth Agnes Hughes birth record as father. Occupation listed as Hawker of Hardware. Possible connection to Romany background because of trade. Mother shown as Magaret Hughes {Tracy} at 5 Whippery lane, Rickergate, Carlisle Uk. Can't find this address in business /residence books, have search on Google Earth to area or 1871, 1881 etc census ???? Family stories say Margaret was Irish thus my entry in this area. Have 2 previous threads on this forum re: subjects. Grand Mother turns up in 1891 Census UK visiting at St. Cuthbert Without in Carlisle at age 12. RG12 piece: 4287 folio:7 page: 7 .Still searching to fill in 1880 to 1891 date time??!! Any leads would be helpful to back trace family.

there appears to be only one entry for Whippery Lane on the 1881 Census (RG11/5157/127 Page 25) and it looks like a Lodging house. No Hughes living there unfortunately. Possibly the family were off selling their wares and could be anywhere..

sorry cannot find them anywhere along Whippery Lane. There do seem to be a quite a few Irish living in the area.

Just for interest, Whippery Lane is shown clearly on this 1899 OS map (it's on the right hand side near the bottom):

They were certainly not short of pubs in Rickergate!
