Hello All...I have an ancestor who was sent to M/cr Ind School aged 9 yrs. He was sent there for 7 Years. Does anyone know if he would he have lived there or would he have been able to live at home (family only lived a few streets away). Thanks

Although it doesn't answer your question you might be interested in this article on the BBC website about Swinton Industrial School which was set up by the Manchester Poor Law Union.
The Hidden Lives website also has an interesting account of Industrial Schools in general.

The answer is most probably no. Don't forget that these were places of detention.would he have been able to live at home
Children were sent to industrial schools for various reasons but a common feature was that it wasn't judged appropriate for them to live at home. A small number were allowed to live at home on licence if conditions there were suitable. This was probably to prepare them for their 'release'.Peter Goodey

Thanks for your reply Peter & Josie. I checked out the missing-ancesters site and children were sent to Ardwick from all over the place. I assume he was sent there for playing truant because the Manchester school board paid 4shillings a week for him to the industrial school.
