If you know about Ernest Edward's birth, why don't you know Jane's maiden name? ....you need her name to try to find her marriage to Stephen and to find her on earlier census.

The only Stephen RANSOM(E) shown on the Cambridgeshire FHS Baptismal Index is that of a Stephen RANSOM baptised in 1835 at Upwell who was the son of Charlotte & John. Siblings include Robert baptised 1817, Hannah baptised 1818, Robert baptised 1825, John baptised 1830 and Charlotte baptised 1833 all at Upwell. FHS Marriage Index shows that a John RANSOM married a Charlotte GERMANY at Upwell St Peter in 1816 - IGI shows the date to have been 4 February 1816. There is also a marriage in 1840 of a Charlotte RANSOM at Upwell St Peter and an equivalent entry for a James LOW. 1851 census of Upwell Norfolk (HO107/1767, folio 538, page 22) shows this family living at Town Street:
James LOW Head Mar 47 Labourer Norfolk Hilgay
Charlotte do Wife Mar 55 do Upwell
Stephen RANSOM Son by law U 15 do do
There is a Banns record on the Cambridgeshire Marriage Index of a Stephen RANSOM in 1874 at Outwell but no further information is shown. However, if you purchase the birth certificate of the child who is your actual ancestor, I should be able to search for Jane under her maiden name on the Baptismal Index for you and probably find the marriage of her parents.

(Ernest) Edward was 10 months old on the 1881 census so would have been born in 1880. This looks a likely birth registration:
Ernest Edward Ransom, birth registered 3rd quarter of 1880, Holbeach district, vol. 7a, page 395. As has already been mentioned above, his birth certificate should give you his mother's maiden name.

The odd thing is that I can't find a birth registration for Charlotte Ransom(e). Was she perhaps illegitimate and was registered under her mother's name, particularly as there doesn't seem to be a marriage for Stephen and Jane. Censuses give her birthplace as Chatteris but Chatteris has no baptism of a Charlotte with mother Jane 1871-1881 - bear in mind also that in 1891 she gave her age as 17.
It's vital that you get Ernest's birth certificate to get Jane's maiden name.
The other problem is Stephen where there's a discrepancy in his age - in 1881 he was 41, yet the most likely baptism was in 1835, and the only death 1881-1891 (Jane was described as widow in 1891) that seems likely was in Wisbech registration district in the Dec quarter 1890 where he's age 60. So a bit of a mess!
