Hi Belinda
It depends when in 1841 he was born. If it was after the census, then you won't find him with his family until 1851.
The only Stephen RANSOM/E I could see on FreeBMD had a birth registered in the September Quarter 1841, Freebridge Lynn Registration District (Norfolk) - Vol. 13; Page 141.
1851 Census (HO107/1828/46/5) Mill House, Harpley, Freebridge Lynn
George RANSOM (head) b. 1800
Elizabeth (wife) b. 1803
Martha (dau) b. 1833
Susen (dau) b. 1835
Stephen (son) b. 1842
All born Harpley, Norfolk, except the wife who was born Rougham, Norfolk.Jellylegs

Hi
I found him in 1841 census which i believe to be his parents so im thinking that he must have been born around 1836
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 755; Book: 10; Civil Parish: Upwell; County: Norfolk; Enumeration District: 11; Folio: 4; Page: 1
Found him in the 1851 (just now) and in the 1881 but still cannot find his marriage to Jane

in 1891 Jane and the two children are lodging with a Chapman family. RG12; Piece: 1304; Folio 74; Page 17;
Ancestry has a member submitted correction to the name so it might be worth getting in touch with the holder to see if they have any information you dont.

I assume you are sure you have the right Stephen in 1881 because you are descended from one of his children, Charlotte or Edward? Why not get a copy birth certificate for Jane's maiden name?
Looking at the 1861 census in Harpley for a Stephen with parents George and Elizabeth, there is Stephen age 20 and a grandson Stephen RANSOM age 5. It looks like Stephen age 30 in 1871 in Harpley is married to Elizabeth age 26 and living with them is his nephew Stephen RANSOME age 14.
If this is your Stephen, Jane would be his second wife or if Elizabeth still alive, they didn't marry at all. You need to work backwards from a birth certificate of one of his children.

There's an interesting 1868 gazetteer entry for Upwell in GENUKI:
"UPWELL, a parish, partly in the hundred of Wisbech, Isle of Ely, county Cambridge, and partly in that of Clackclose, county Norfolk, 6½ miles south-east of Wisbech, its post town, and 95 from London."
which might explain the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk confusion.
see http://www.
genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CAM/Upwell/
which goes on to mention that the parish church stood in the Norfolk.

FamilySearch shows a 15 year old Stephen Ransom in Upwell (Norfolk) in 1851; relationship to the head of the household is son-in-law, presumably here meaning stepson. I don't have access to the full details at the moment.
The Cambridgeshire FHS baptism database 1801-1837 can be searched at
www.
cfhs.org.uk/BaptismIndex/index.html
It shows that a Stephen son of Charlotte & John Ransom was baptised at Upwell in 1835.
