    Default A Midwife's Register

    Hello All

I have been desperately trying to tie down the family history of my maternal great grandmother Annie Ellen Griffiths without success for about 18 months now but without a date of birth found it impossible. She gave birth to my grandmother,Doris Annie Griffiths, illegitimately,in Poulton cum Seacombe on the Wirral in 1907.From my grandmother's birth certificate I have established the name of the midwife as Ellen Martin who was practising as a midwife in the Seacombe area at the time and is shown as such on the 1911 census. On other sites on the net I have come across a few instances of registers compiled by individual midwives which show a wealth of information about the individual deliveries undertaken by the particular midwife including the age of the mother. The information shown is remarkably similar so may well have been in a prescribed format possibly following the 1902 Act regulating midwives.

The $64000 question is do any of you very knowledgeable people know where such records may be held?

    Ian

    Hello Ian,

Have you tried contacting the Wirral Archives Service? They might have such a register in their records or at least be able to point you in the right direction.
