I would appreciate any data related to solving a puzzle relating to the relationship between Emanuel ' Money' Moses and who he and his wife may have been married to. The issue arises from a copy of a Hyamson family tree which a direct descendant of John Edwards ( known as Emanuel Moses) has kindly sent to me. The tree describes John Edwards b abt 1795- 1893 as ' properly Emanuel Moses' but importantly says he was a 'step brother of Moses Angel and 'somehow related to the Bedington Moses family'.
The assumption being made is that Moses Angel is in fact Angel Moses son of Emanuel ' Money' Moses and his wife Sarah Joseph. Emanue00 was transported for 14 years for gold bullion theft in 1840 and died in New Norfok hospital Tasmania in 1841.
There is a range of data on Emanuel ' Money' Moses which I will include in additional postings and Moses Angel ( Angel Moses) was the Headmaster of the Jew's Free School and married Rebecca Godfrey ( daughter of Godfrey Levy and Sarah Crawcour).
My key concerns are whether or not Hyamson is right to speculate John Edwards is a step brother to Moses but equally there are issues about this not least that John's father was called Samuel and that the Ashkenazi usual naming tradition was not to name an individual after a living relative.
I already have copies of the criminal records and trial data on Emanuel 'Money' Moses plus data on the children of Emanuel and Sarah but initial comments would be welcome.

Synagogue Scribes records NSM2 145 show the marriage of John Edwards ( widower) on 16 June 1841 slop seller 83 Ratcliffe Highway- father Samuel to Jane Hart at 18 Princes Street Spitalfields. Family trees I have seen record that John was married first to Hannah Zipporah who died 23 Oct 1837. Samuel Edwards ( Moses) was born abt 1773.The 1851 census records give various dob for John Edwards ranging from 1851 b abt 1806; 1861 b abt 1811; 1871 b abt 1804
GSM 089/53 records the marriage of Emanuel 'Money' Moses ( Hebrew name Menachem Mendele) father's Hebrew name Aharon Schwars/Schwartz Moshe to Sarah Joseph -father Hirsh Tremer SGL 2 Sept 1804.
There is also a marriage GSM 049B/12 between Emanuel Moses Hebrew name Mendele- father's Hebrew name Moshe to Sally Robin-father's Hebrew name Jacob Robin 27 June 1799and the burial of a Sally Moses (MN) Nov-Dec 1801 Hair Street Brick Lane - spouse Manquiva Cambridge - so this is unlikely to be Emanuel Moses.

EMANUEL 'MONEY' MOSES
Emanuel ' Money' Moses was aged 56 when he was convicted for his part in gold bullion theft in 1839 with his widowed daughter Mrs Alice Abrahams. The Old Bailey online records describe the trial I have access to a range of newspaper articles on the trial ( there were several others involved in the theft). Emanuel was the landlord of the Black Lion Vinegar Lane near Drury Lane Covent Garden. National Archive records show him as being insured at the address from at least 1836. The newspaper articles describe Emanuel as a known receiver of stolen goods and one who the police had tried to indict without succes for some years. The England and Wales Criminal Registers 1791-1892 show he was given 14 years transportation to Van Diemen's Land in 1839 and left on the Lord Lyndoch 7 Sept 1840 but died in New Norfolk hospital July 1841. His wife Sarah and several daughters also sailed to Tasmania to be with him.

All of The Beddington Family are my cousins, I have never heard of Emanuel Money Moses. Their grandfather was Samuel E Moses (-1805) & Rachel (born Abrahams). From what I know The Moses family originated in Alsace. Many of Samuel's descendants, including 2 children merged with my various branches. Most families changed their names - the British branch to Beddington. Several branches of Samuels did go to Australia, including Tasmania. Reading up on Emanuel Moses and his descendants in 'Family Tree Circles', I would have expected to find at least one marriage connecting the families but I failed to find one. Emanuel's descendants moved to Dunedin where many of my cousins also lived but again no marriages.
