I think that a lot depends upon where you are looking - and when.
For instance, many of my ancestors lived in villages and so there was not really much option as to which school they went to because it was the closest one. I have followed this through by checking school records held by the local Records Office or Archives.
In towns, there were also many independent private schools, but records might still be held by the local Archives.

I've not heard of anywhere that's actually digitised their school records so they can be searched online. County Records Offices hold the records for schools in their area so really it's a matter of locating where your ancestor was living when they would have been of school age and checking the local RO
You could try searching Access to Archives at TNA for Education or Schhol records at a particular locality.
This is one of these times where the only chance of finding something could be by painstaking searching at the Local Archives

Thank you both for your replies. My ancestors were from villages and small towns, so may have some luck.
Regards

You'll find that county directories are an initial help in identifying schools. My ancestors were from villages and small towns
This Research Guide may be useful to provide some top level background on organisation and history. It's useful, at least, to understand the difference between "National Schools" and "British Schools".
Most of your ancestors (even if you haven't identified them yet) wouldn't have attended any school!Peter Goodey
