My great grandfather Frederick Duke-Norris apparently fought in the Boer War. He apparently fought for the British although was here in South Africa in the late 1800`s, early 1900`s. All the information I have on him is that he married Katherine Duke-Norris and they had 13 children & had a farm in Transkei,South Africa. Are there any records of men who fought in the Boer Wars?
Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jennifer
My GG was also in the Boer War, and he was a Brick wall up until a month ago (Named William Baines & there are loads of them in the UK!)
I found his war records on A*******y, (with the help of Members here, so a big thankyou) and did a "Pay per view" to access them, the information I now have from those has lead to his location in the UK, and parents and siblings so loads more for me to investigate, and a big brick wall demolished to the delight of my Father who remembers him well.
As my GG survived, I found him in the "Military" - "Pension Records" section on A*******y.
I hope this helps, and gives you some more information.
My GG was in the cavalry, in action at LadySmith, I have also found Medal rolls for him by googling him.
Good luck!
Julie

Just so we have a birth date and place, is this your Frederick?
name: Frederick Duke Norris
baptism/christening date: 25 Sep 1859
baptism/christening place: Saint James, Southampton, Hampshire, England
birth date: 03 Apr 1859
father's name: Richard Norris
mother's name: Elizabeth
Looking at NAAIRS, I see there is a mention of a mortgage bond in 1898, which places him in South Africa at the right time for the second Boer War and there is also a mention of an 'Insolvent Liquidation And Distribution Account' in 1906/1908.
Have you checked the Register of the Second Anglo-Boer War on the pay/subscription site findmypast? I did run a quick search for him and although there were some possibilities, there was nothing that included DUKE (or an initial D) in the name - but it would be better if you had a look.
The pay/subscription site Ancestry has a 'Casualties of the Boer War, 1899-1902' collection but your ancestor would only be on this if he was either wounded, went missing or had died during the conflict.

Thank you Olliecat, I am sure this is my g granfather. He did have a son Richard as well, possibly named after his father. I did get that document from the CapeTown Archives regarding his mortgage bond but not much information on it at all. The "Duke" confuses me as my grandmother`s name was Edith Dorothy Duke Norris, no double barrel surname and my late Uncle Pine,( Percival Norris) her younger brother never had the surname Duke-Norris. He once told me some family members kept the Duke-Norris surname & others didn`t. I am in contact with a few of my late Dad`s cousins who are Duke -Norris. Maybe my
g grandfather took on that surname when coming to South Africa.
Thanks again
Jenny
