    Default Bishop Auckland Workhouse...

Wondered if anyone could look up a record on the 1841 census for Elinor Goundry born 1761 who was in Bishop Auckland workhouse at that time.
I found her on 1851 census on Ancestry but cannot find her anywhere else. Maybe I need to go directly to Durham Records Office for the information?

    Thanks, Lynn

She doesn't seem to be in the workhouse in 1841 but is apparently living alone in Coundon ...

1841 census (held by TNA, Crown copyright)
    HO107/307 bk 12 folio 4 page 3
    Church St, Coundon, Durham
Eliner Goundry, 80, Widow [deleted] Y

(Ancestry has indexed her as Gliness GOUNDING)

If you want the workhouse records, you could try Durham county record office. But the Workhouses website suggests that relatively few records survive.

    Census Ref is HO107; Piece 307; Book/Folio 12/4; Page 3

She is an 80 year old Widow, born in County - living alone. Not convinced it is the workhouse though.

Thanks for info, I can recall a Church Street, Coundon. I wonder why the word 'Widow' would has been deleted?

    Any ideas?

Simply because marital status should not have been entered in the column headed Profession/Trade/Employment.
