I have found my Uncle James Thom Grant b 1899 in Aberdeen Identity Certificate and No. 135399 Rating 4th Engineer although his second name is down as Thomas, it should be THOM which was his Mothers maiden name but the date of birth and place are correct.
There is also an other document N. R. 5 (1928) Dis. A. No 1052732 is this his discharge papers. It says Name and Official No. of Ship LANCASHIRE 140529, date of Engagement 3rd Feb 1922.
How can I use both these documents to find out more about his service in the Merchant Navy and to find any other Ships he might have served on

Hopefully someone more expert will be along soon, but meanwhile I might be able to start you off ...
The reverse of the C10 card (from Find My Past) gives you the Official Number (ON) of a vessel on which he served (109650). Also, next to his photo, a month/year for joining that vessel (1 - 21 = January 1921).
You can identify the vessel by searching the Crew List Index Project (CLIP), which serves as an online finding aid for the records.
www.
crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsnum.php
Enter the vessel's Official Number and Search. From the results page, scroll down and follow the links to find out if any crew lists & agreements survive for that vessel for the right date, either at a local record office, the National Archives, or the Maritime History Archive at Newfoundland.
You can then repeat the same search for Lancashire ON 140529.
I'm not fully familiar with the format of crew lists at this date. But some earlier lists record a seaman's previous vessel, which theoretically allows you to construct at least part of his seafaring career by tracing him from one list to another.
While the documents themselves can't be seen online, you can use online references to order copies from the various repositories of any lists that survive.

The second Ship was the "TUSCANY" owned by the MacIver line which operated on the Liverpool, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Rosario Routes. Does anyone have any information on this ship movements or crew lists 1921-1922
