Hello
Can anyone tell me what C of E Churches were close to LIMEHURST in the 1820's?
I am looking for the Baptism of my GG Grandmother SARAH ANN GREAVES who was born around 1821 in Limehurst Lancashire according to the 1851 Unfilmed Census of Ashton-under-Lyne where she was living at Howard Court and her married name in 1851 was HAGUE. She died in 1870 aged 49 years and is buried in St Michael's Churchyard.
I have searched St Michael's Church Ashton-under-Lyne. I have looked at St Mary's Church Oldham and St Peter's Church Oldham.
Her father was RICHARD GREAVES (a Glass Blower in 1841 and a Baker in 1846)
There is a probable RICHARD GREAVES in St Leonard's Church Middleton baptised in 1784 but there is no SARAH ANN in the 1820's at the moment.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Regards
Pat Berry

GREAVES-LIMEHURST OLDHAM in 1820's
Hello
Thanks for your message. It is not on the 1841 Census that RICHARD GREAVES was a GLASSBLOWER but on the details of the Marriage Entry from the Parish Register of St Michael's Church Ashton-under-Lyne which was sent to me from the Tameside Family History Centre.
The Marriage took place on 14th March 1841.
HENRY LOWDEN FOWLER of Full Age Widower, stripper of the Town-no father's name-just the name of his mother JANE FOWLER, spinster.
SARAH GREAVES of Full Age Spinster of this Town, daughter of RICHARD GREAVES, Glass Blower.
Witnesses were Thomas Grimshaw & William Armitage.
On Ancestry.co.uk 1841 Census I think RICHARD GREAVES has been transcribed as RICHARD GREEN 53 & his wife is MARY GREEN 60 living at Duncan Street Ashton-under-Lyne and they are living next door to WILLIAM HIBBERT, Ann & family.
This RICHARD GREEN has been transcribed correctly on Findmypast as RICHARD GREAVES.
The reason I think this Richard Greaves is Sarah Greaves's father is that when HENRY LOWDEN FOWLER (known as LOWDEN) married SARAH he had a 3 month old baby JOHN HENRY from his deceased wife SARAH WINTERBOTTOM and that baby must have been brought up in the HIBBERT household as ANN HIBBERT was a LOWDEN and the baby JOHN HENRY LOWDEN died in Duncan Street A-U-L in January 1842 aged 1 yr in the presence of William Hibbert of Duncan Street A-U-L. (The marriage of ANN LOWDEN (LOWDIN) & WILLIAM HIBBERT has just appeared on Lan OPC for St Michael's Church for 1834.
SARAH must have left HENRY LOWDEN after marrying him as she was living with THOMAS HAGUE in Howard Court A-U-L in 1843 when their first daughter was born.
HENRY LOWDEN died in 1846 in Hayfield Derbyshire where he lived with Sarah on the 1841 Census. SARAH married THOMAS HAGUE on 17 August 1846 and her father was a BAKER then.
It is on the Unfilmed 1851 Census for A-U-L that it is stated that Sarah was born in LIMEHURST (Limhurst)
On the 1841 Ancestry Census HENRY LOWDEN has been transcribed as HENRY LENDIN and Sarah as SARAH LOWDON living at Charlestown, Glossop.
All very confusing but I would just like to find a Baptism for SARAH ANN GREAVES. I have sent for a LDS Microfilm for a person who maybe my RICHARD GREAVES baptised 1784 at St Leonard's Church Middleton. It is one of those Endowments for the Dead Records that may give me more names.
Thanks
Pat

SARAH ANNE GREAVES BORN ABOUT 1821 LIMEHURST
Hello
I am still trying to find a Baptism for my GG Grandmother SARAH ANNE GREAVES who was born in LIMEHURST, Oldham, Lancashire about 1821.
Her father was RICHARD GREAVES and he was a Baker in 1846 when Sarah Anne married THOMAS HAGUE.
Another SARAH ANNE GREAVES has now come into the family tree. She was the daughter of HENRY GREAVES & MARY BROOKS and was born in 1865 in Oldham. HENRY GREAVES was born in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. His father was Jonathan Greaves and his mother was Maria.
The latest SARAH ANNE GREAVES married JECHONIAS WILD in 1886 and then they went to Massachusetts, USA to live,
I would love to find a connection to the two SARAH ANNE GREAVES and also find a Baptism for Sarah Anne Greaves (my GG Grandmother).
Any ideas?
Pat

I see from your postings here and on other forums that Sarah Ann had previously been married to
Henry Lowden Fowler.
To fill in some of the details in case it helps other members in the search for Sarah: from Lancs OPCs, Sarah was a spinster 'of Town' when she married Henry Lowden Fowler at St Michael and All Angels, Ashton under Lyne, on 14 March 1841. Her father is shown as Richard Greaves, glass blower. Witnesses Thomas Grimshaw and William Armitage.Last edited by Coromandel; 27-08-2011 at 9:01 AM. Reason: to add link to earlier thread

This is the closest I could find on the IGI
SARAH GREAVES
Christening: 26 NOV 1820 Saint Mary, Oldham, Lancashire
Father: ROBT. GREAVES Mother: JINNY
Batch P005623
According to Google maps Limehurst school is about a mile from Oldham City Centre and looking at the Hugh Wallis site the LDS looks to have good coverage of the Oldham Churches for the period. Did Richard Greaves sign the marriage certificate or mark an X. If an X then given local brogue a Clergyman writing him up as Richard or Robert I would think quite plausible.

Not Ashton under Lyne?LIMEHURST, Oldham
Census returns suggest a parish of Ashton under Lyne or Bardsley (but Bardsley parish may be a later creation)

Hello Peter
Thanks for your message. I have searched St Michael's Church Records Ashton-under-Lyne, and Oldham & Ashton-under-Lyne churches on Lan-Opc site. I have also searched the C Index Cards from LDS (HEIRS) and there were a few likely ones in Middleton, Lancashire & Hey, Yorkshire but their father's don't match up.
I wrote to St Thomas's of Hey & Lees and was told that their records were at Manchester. I haven't followed that lead up yet.
Regards
Pat
