Default Coverage of an 'accident' in Swansea 1914

An 'accident' occurred in Swansea, possibly at the Swansea Docks in 1914. The injuries sustained by this individual were serious enough that he spent 12 weeks off work. He either fell, was pushed or thrown off of a scaffold and landed 16 feet below.

This incident may have garnered interest in a local Swansea paper. What ones existed at that time and where would I likely to able to view archives of same online? If none exist online, then maybe the NLW may have copies that can be searched for a fee, but they would likely need a more specific date.

    Any suggestions appreciated

Try www.swansea.gov.uk or http://www.libraries.swansea.gov.uk:...milyhistory.ht... or www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/. I googled this using "Swansea Newspapers 1914", or you could type in his name and see what pops up if anything. There's also the wording "Welsh Newspapers" to get you started.

A huge assumption that it was anything but an accident - but who knows.

If you knew the circumstances of this person - as I do - you can or may understand why. At present I'm just speculating and playing !!!

The death certificate will clarify some of these details, and there will presumably have been an inquest.

You will probably have already tried The Cambrian Index Online (available via a search engine).

If there is nothing there, you're probably going to need a manual search of newspapers, perhaps at Swansea Local Studies/West Glamorgan Archives. For this you will certainly need the date of death/inquest from the certificate.

He didn't die at that time.

He later joined the Army [1916] and served in France for a little over 5months until his past medical heath issues relating to the incident in 1914 caught up with him in the trenches and he was discharged as medically unfit for service. in 1917

Swansea central library hold microfilm copies of the South Wales Evening / Daily Post which are the publications most likely to have featured a story - they are not indexed with regard to accidents so it would mean a manual trawl through a couple of films, the library does offer a research service will be cheaper if you can narrow the date down though.

No problem - you're busy - and he isn't going anywhere

I wasn't able to narrow down the date specifically, and if the incident occurred after the start of hostilities with the Kaiser, it could well be that it was never covered by the the press.

I did ask someone to check with the library and to ask for assistance as he is somewhat handicapped, but nothing came of it.

Can you - Noni - tell me what hospitals were in operation in Swansea in 1914? Something may still be found in some old archived records - if they were not destroyed.

    I live in hope.

    Hi Colin,

Have a rummage in TNA's Hospital Records Database. Plonk Swansea into the "Town" box and click on search. You will then be able to check out the details of each establishment, what records are available where and when they were operating (so to speak.....)
