This looks like him - baptised on 17.09.1865 at St. Matthew, City Road, Islington, along with siblings Stephen, Ellen Abigail, and Robert Alfred. Address 11 City Gardens (I think). Parents Robert and Sarah FRANKLIN. Robert is a Painter, which ties in with his occupation (House Painter) on the 1881 census.

For the benefit of others the 1881 census reference is RG11/356/92/page 34 Crown Copyright TNA
This would appear to be the family in 1871. Unfortunately Robert was already widowed by then
All named Franklin and living at Owens Court, St. James, Clerkenwell
Robert 51 Painter
Henry 20
William 18
Stephen 14
Helen 9
Alfred 8
Samuel 6
The original image is quite faded but Samuel seems to have been enumerated as born in Islington

This may be his birth -
Births Jun 1865
FRANKLIN Samuel Islington 1b 332
This is very likely to be his sister -
Births Mar 1862
FRANKLIN Ellen Abigail St. Lule 1b 594 (I think we can assume that St Lule = St Luke
You'll need to order one or more birth certificates to get the mother's maiden name.Peter Goodey

There are a number of possible marriages for a Robert Franklin to a Sarah so I think your best bet would be to order the birth certificate of one of the children to discover Sarah's former name.
As Ellen Abigail is particularly uncommon a name that might be your best bet:
Franklin Ellen Abigail Mar qtr 1862 St. Luke vol 1b page 594

I think this is Robert's marriage to Sarah (from Ancestry)
29 November 1857, St. Mark, Clerkenwell
Robert FRANKLIN (full age) Widower - Painter. Father Michael FRANKLIN, Carpenter
Sarah BEGENT (full age) Spinster. Father James BEGENT, Farmer
Sorry, but I can't quite read their addresses, but they look very similar.
Have had another look and the address looks like Goswell Terrace - Number 15 for Robert and no number given for Sarah. The witnesses were Henry Brooks and Mary Ann Begent.Last edited by Jellylegs; 15-08-2011 at 05:25 PM. Reason: added extra info.

In 1861 they appear to have been living at 5 Northampton terrace, St. Lukes. Sarah was enumerated as born abt.1827 at Hythe, Kent.

The ages of the children living with them would imply that one or both of them was previously married which would fit with the marriage found by Jellylegs that showed Robert as a widow. To be certain however you do need to get hold of one of the birth certificates.
