    Default 1891 Census Address.

I have showing on the 1881 census a relative living at 5 Foundry Street,Warrington. His employment was signal man employed by the CLC who had a station within a short walking distance of this address.

By 1891 he had left this address and moved with his work to Toxteth.

I have been looking at a 1895 Trade directory for Warrington and in particular 5 Foundry Street, its occupant at this time was a railway signal man, could it be that this house was owned by the Railway Company.

So my request for help is, has some forum member got an address search facility for the 1891 census that they could look at and advise me if at the time of that census a railway worker was living there.

    Thanks in advance
    Geoff W

A chap by the name of James WARBURTON was living there with his family. Occupation: railway signalman. Someone with local knowledge may know more about the this street.

In 1891 5 Foundry Street, Warrington, was occupied by James Warburton, railway signalman, and his family.

    RG12/3074/137/page 13

On the same page there are another 4 railway employees and 5 on the previous page. It's possible that they were cottages that were owned by the Railway but I think it needs someone with particular knowledge of railway workers to voice an opinion.

It could simply be a matter of convenience that they lived close to their workplace but rented from a private landlord.

In order that your thread can hopefully attract the attention of someone with more specialist knowledge I am moving it over to the "Railwaymen" Forum in our Occupations section where it might stand a better chance of a more definitive reply.

    Hi

You could try and contact the My Warrington web site
    www
    mywarrington.me.uk/my_warrington.htm

they do refer to Foundry Street in that it was near the coal yard of the Warrington & Newton Railway off Back Dallam Lane. They may be able to help
