Hi..
Simple question....
Can someone please tell me if the registration district of Merthyr Tydfil includes a coastal area? I and several 2nd cousins have been searcing for the death of our 3X gr. grandfather Amos Hutchinson who was a master mariner from Gravesend. We are sure he died at sea or at least elsewhere as he isn't with the rest of the family. There is a death registered in Merthyr Tydfil in the last qtr. of 1837 for an Amos. We can't find him on the 1841 census, his wife and children are living with her brother, but of course they don't give a marital status. 1851 census has her a widow. The youngest children were born early 1830"s..................
Would like to know more before anyone orders the certificate.
Thanks
Sue

Merthyr Tydfil in Glamorgan is nowhere near the coast. You can see a list of the civil parishes covered by the district here. Also, here it is on Google maps.
Edit: The river Taff runs from Merthyr to Cardiff but I don't think it was used much for transportation. A canal was built in 1790 which ran from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff and was used for transporting goods (from the iron mines etc.) down to the coast.

Wondering which locations Amos and his family were associated with apart from Gravesend. Starting with the 1841 census and assuming this is the right family ...
1841: Piece 461; Book: 2; Folio: 5; Page: 5 (crown copyright, care of the TNA)
Northfleet, Kent
POVEY, Richd 35
HUTCHINSON, Caroline 40
ELDRIDGE, Anne 20
HUTCHINSON, Cathen 15
HUTCHINSON, Elizabeth 14
HUTCHINSON, Sarah 8
HUTCHINSON, William 5 mo
Only Richd was born in the county
There are the following baptisms for children of Amos and Caroline, (in each case, the father's occupation is mariner.)
Also, from family search, we have...- Ann Povey Hutchinson on 25 Nov 1821 at Poplar.
- Frederick George Sheridan Hutchinson on 2 Nov 1823 at Rotherhithe St Mary.
- Catherine Charlotte Hutchinson on 7 Dec 1825 at Rotherhithe St Mary
- Elizabeth Hutchinson on 31 Aug 1828 at Rotherhithe St Mary
Wondering if the Sarah baptised in Yorkshire belongs to the above family. Looking at a tree relating to this family it appears that daughter Ann Povey Hutchinson married John Elvidge in Yorkshire in 1840, so there appears to be links to this county. Also wondering who the 5 month old William in the 1841 census belongs to ( grandson perhaps.)- Sarah Hutchinson on 19 Jan 1832 at Swinefleet, York, England

Thanks everyone.. I keep forgetting about Genuki which I do have bookmarked.
My excuse ..I have beans on the brain.
Yes, we have all that information and feel Amos was likely born in Yorkshire...have a baptism for a possible canidate.
Caroline and Amos married in London and lived there before moving to Gravesend. ( Maybe Caroline moved there after Amos "died" we don't know for sure)
Yes, we have searched CityArk as well as other records and as some family still live in the area they have searched records and church yards in person!
William is Ann's son. Should be Elvidge, not Hutchinson.

There's a tree on Ancestry that says an Amos Hutchinson arrived in New York on 15 Aug 1849 (New York 1820-1850 Passenger Lists). I no longer have Worldwide access, so can't view the record.

Hi Jellylegs...
Thanks for that, but doing a quick search I couldn't find it. There's also some very incorrect trees on there ( as usual) with Amos and his wife Caroline getting married in the West Indes!! Maybe you could pm me with more details so I can find the one you are referring to some time tomorrow. I won't be on the computer until later in the evening here. Please and thanks .

Came across this checking for Amos. It mentions Elizabeth's marriage to a John Hillier (FreeBMD Dec 1846, N Aylesford, 5 624). The marriage cert might (not guaranteed even if deceased at time of marriage) indicate if Amos was deceased at this point.
If you haven't already done so you might find the following useful (re tracing seamen)
