What happened to his mother?

My grand father's brother was born Charles Rathbone Stuart on October 21 1887. But he was registered by his aunt Kate Sullivan on 21 December.as "In charge of the child".
Mothers name Ellen Stuart prev Sullivan and father George Stuart.
[ But the fathers actual name was George Rathbone.]
Two years later Charles Rathbone born October 21 87,was baptised in Camberwell with parents George and Clara.
What happened to Ellen? I have been unable to find any record of marriage to either Ellen or Clara.
I don't think they are the same person as we have no Clara's in the family but my grandfather did name his 2nd daughter Ellen. My grand father and his other siblings were not registered at birth, or baptised any where that I can find, I'm sure George must have been one of our many black sheep! But I would love to break down this wall of who my grand father was. Any ideas where I could look for Ellen?
