    Default Adoption records - Wales

I know my g grandmother was adopted between the 1901 and 1911 census' by her uncle, (I know her birth mother also, who seems to have gone off the rails one way or another) and I have the uncle's details. What I wonder is whether the details of the adoption process / application records might be available and have useful information on them, and if so where to look?

Until 1926 adoptions were informal affairs that required no legal validation. It was perfectly legal for any person to adopt a child and the only requirement was the consent of the parent or parents. It is highly unlikely that your gt.grandmother's adoption would have left any paper trail. Have you looked to see if her uncle left a will? If he did and she was a beneficiary it might be interesting to see how he referred to her.

If you know that she was adopted between 1901 and 1911 I assume that you've found her in the 1911 census with her uncle. If not let us have her details and someone can take a look for you.

p.mca has another thread here which gives greater detail about the adopted gt.grandmother and her adoption. If you can help with this query please reply on the other thread.
