    which gives us a marriage
    June qtr 1919
Joe Morton Huddersfield (?) Vol 9a Page 322 - Spouse BURGESS (missing from FreeBMD transcription)
However FMP has bride's name as Kate I. BURGESS

how strange. They married BEFORE Christiana was born, so why was she a BURGESS?

One thought was that Bertram was thought to have died in WW1 & then turned up out of the blue - but that's really clutching at straws. The key event seems to be her leaving The Grange and abandoning her children - something v. serious seems to have occured.

Another slight error. Kirton Park Station should be KIVETON Park Station. It is about four miles from where I live and is literally a few houses grouped around a very small station, adjacent to the village of Kiveton Park. Woodhouse is about four miles away in the direction of Sheffield, and does have it own church but was formerly in the parish of Handsworth

Since the end of WW2 there have been numerous boundary changes as the City of Sheffield has gradually taken in more and more of the surrounding areas and records have been transferred. The archives are closed to allow building work; it was found that conditions in what was formerly a large garage and workshop had become less than ideal for the storage of documents and this is being rectified. A limited service is operating out the the Local Studies Department in the Central Library.

I should have picked up on the Kirton / Kiveton mistake but, in my defence, it's nearly 50 years since my college days in Sheffield and contact with family in that area has been lost.

Bertram Snr was ill with diabetes, before insulin came into use, he never served in WW1. It was the diabetes which killed him in 1921
