Many years ago, my Grandmother told me a story of helping her Father on his grocery rounds with horse and cart, in Newport. She was only about 9 then and was sent into one of the houses on Stow Hill for their list. She knocked the door , a call from the house , "Come in" .....
and out she came as quick as her little legs would take her.
There was a naked man in a tin bath in front of the fire .
She was very cross with her Dad and asked him to hurry the horse home !
.
In the census of 1911 says he was a fish and ?fruit salesman .
My Grandmother also told me that her Father used to race the horses who pulled grocery cart. They would go to the trotting races that were around at the time. Her son (my Father) was an apprentice jockey at Caerleon Racecourse, so it must be in the genes !
.
All this waffling and I have not yet asked my question.
.
One of my great-grandfathers trotting horses was killed on maybe the Caerleon Road, when it bolted and was hit by a tram / trolley bus (I can't remember).
Apparently the event was reported in the South Wales Argus. Many years ago, I spent quite a few hours and days searching through the actual papers of the time, but may have had the wrong year ... I don't know, but I never found it.
Since joining the 21st century, I have tried South Wales Argus archives, but they don't go back that far.
.
Anyone have any ideas how I may proceed ?
.
Many Thanks

If you are a member of Gwent FHS you could ask the secretary to find a volunteer to search the microfilms in the reference library.

“You can’t give her that!” she screamed. “It’s not safe!”
