Waverley Temperance Hotel

Hi, can anyone help, I am trying to find The Waverley 'Temperance' hotel in Leominster 1920c may have closed by the 1930s. The proprietor was Edith Sansom; nee Mahon. Husband Capt. John Ernest Sansom (Royal Garrison Artillery).
It is also possible Edith became a police sergeant???

An address search on 1901 census gives a Temperance Hotel in Etnam St. Today there is a Waverley Care Home in Etnam St. This looks to be newly built - but possibly on the site of the old Waverley? Haven't spotted anything else so far.

The hotel in 1901 was run by a widow and her daughter. There was no # on Etnam Street for this place, however the name may have been dropped and a # applied in 1911 as another widow was indicated as a licenced victualler

As I noted this was from 1901 and 1911.

The good folks who took over after W.W.1 made it known - as the original poster had noted - a "Temporance" establishment. Quite possibly, they were of a 'bent' to attract a better type person than had previously frequented the facility!!!

Kelly's 1913 directory of Leominster shows 'Vearnal's Commercial Temperance Hotel (2 minutes from station; motor accommodation)' at 50 Etnam Street. See

If you could track down a later directory this might tell you the address of the Waverley Temperance Hotel.

The Temperance Hotel at 50 Etnam Street was run by the widow Vearnals (or some such name) in both 1901 and 1911. It was a temperance hotel on both occasions. There were also licensed premises elsewhere in the street.

Thanks for that,, I still hope to find a later Kelly's, when Edith married her 'Toyboy' Capt. in 1919 the Waverley Temperance Hotel was given as her address.
