Hi Everyone
My husbands great uncle - brother to my husbands grandad, Joseph Henry Straw, on his gravestone it says he was killed accidently in Denaby Main Coillery on Sept 2 1959 he was 46 years old, I cannot find any more information on this anywhere, I had a look on coalmining history rescource centre but cannot find any mention of it and various other sites but no mention of what happened. I have spoken to my husbands parents who are now in their 70's and they can't really remember much, except that he died down in the mine because they couldn't get him out!
Any suggestions would be welcome - thanks

Where did you get the information about the dates on his gravestone from, zane?
There doesn't seem to be a death registration in 1959 for a Joseph Henry Shaw. There is a death registered at Don Valley of a Joseph Shaw in 1959 but he was recorded as being 56. The death was also registered in the June quarter so too early for the date that you have stated.
Denaby Main is in the Doncaster area of Yorkshire which is where the death would have been registered if he actually died at the colliery but there doesn't seem to be a likely match in the indexes.

hi notanotherminer
Thanks for looking, my family member is Joseph Henry Straw not Shaw, it gets confusing cos we have Shaw's in the family as well, when we went over to the UK last year I took a photo of the gravestone, I cannot seem to attach it to here, otherwise I would have shown you and my mistake he was 45 not 46, if anyone knows how to attach photos to these then I will happily put it on here. When I click on the picture icon above it says to put in the url address? The pic is in my photos library on the computer.

Firstly, my apologies. I think it's time for me to get some new glasses.my family member is Joseph Henry Straw not Shaw
Have a read of this thread. It tells you how to upload a photo to photobucket and then paste the IMG code into the Forum. Your photo will then display in your post....if anyone knows how to attach photos to these then I will happily put it on here.
I'll now go and have another search under the correct name

Here's the death reference:
Straw, Joseph H Sep qtr 1959 Don Valley vol 2b page 383, aged 45
I appreciate that a death record might not be as detailed as a report on the accident but it will give you the cause of death and might well detail how he sustained his injuries.

Hi zane
It might be worth searching out reports in local newspapers. The Doncaster Chronicle and the South Yorkshire Times both cover the appropriate date: Doncaster Local Studies Library have them on microfilm. They will do research for you (but do not state what their fees are):

doncaster.gov.uk/Leisure_and_Culture/Libraries/Archives_Local_Studies/Local_Studies_Library.asp
Maybe there's a Brit-Gen member who lives nearby and would pop in for you do do a look-up? As you have an exact date of death this shouldn't be too arduous a task.
Another possibility is to try the 'Contact us' option on the Conisbrough and Denaby Main Local History website:
