I believe the bulk of the transcription for 1849 was done some years ago, but you could contact Di Cummings to check (address on the site).
Or, as you are anyway going to the State Archives, why not enquire there -- perhaps in advance of your visit, to save time?
Another option is that his year of immigration may have been reported incorrectly, as it was published many years after the event.
Do let us know how you get on.

I see from a history of Stoke sub Hamdon, at
http://www.
british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66503
that Charles Cave is listed as tenant of the Parsonage from 1820 to 1847. A new tenant, William Darby, had taken over by 1848. Of course the family didn't necessarily set off for Australia as soon as they'd left the Parsonage . . . but this could point to a slightly earlier departure than recorded in the 1907 newspaper.

Aha! It also appeared in The Register a few days earlier (10 July). I eventually found it on Trove, a fuzzy original which has been much garbled by OCR:
'REMARKABLE LONGEVITY'
'From "A Correspondent":- In 1849 there arrived in South Australia Mr. Charles Cave, his wife, and family of ten children - two sons and eight daughters. These all eventually married, with the exception of one daughter. The two sons - Messrs J. D. Cave (Burra) and W. R. Cave (Adelaide) - both survived their wives. Of the daughters - Mesdames J.B. Terrell (Gilberton), J.B.(?) Randell (Malvern), Joseph Howard (Adelaide), James Rawlings (Woodville), William Palmer (Prospect), George Warren (Gawler), and William Clark (Anguston) - all survived their husbands. For over 45 years there wasa not a death in this family. Those now alive are Mr. W.R. Cave and Mesdames Warren, Howard, and Clark. I think this constitutes a somewhat remarkable family record.'

Thankyou Coromandel,
This a little titbit of new info for me, I will have a look at the site.
Charles leased a few houses on the property so he may have stayed on at the parsonage for a little while as William Darby was his brother-in-law.
The family seemed to be quite close.
With regards to the longevity article, I had viewed this previously somewhere, can't remember where but again that points to 1849.
I really don't know how a prominent family like this with 10 children can just disappear from records.
They were very prominent as William Rendall (Charles son) was an extremely well known grain merchant/importer/exporter/ostrich farmer/property developer/Marine board chairman/owner of 5 steam tug boats who had a large mansion at North Adelaide and a 2 storey beautiful home at Stirling in the Adelaide Hills called "Pomona" - their summer residence. It is still there.
He was also the Consul to Chile, as was his son John Rendall Cave after him.
I believe when the depression hit they lost quite a bit.
So you see I am filling in a lot for the family, but there is a gap or two 1849 emigration and 1850 - 1867 when William married.
At the moment I have Somerset Records chasing Charles' father John Cave.
Anyway, thankyou again for your help,
Cheers
Chris
