    Default Expertise required

I think I have finally cracked the Jones's. Miners from Staffordshire.
I have traced back through the census and would like the experts to check that I haven't slipped up and perhaps discover a few things on the way. Thomas Henry Jones b1900 was my grandfather.
His mother was Jane Pumphrey but I am okay with this line. Just the Jones to sort.

1911 census to get you started (crown copyright TNA):
Jones George Head b1857 Coal Miner Hewer Bilston Staffs
Jones Jane nee Pumphrey b1864 Wolverhampton Staffs
Jones Samuel Son Single b1884 Coal Miner Hewer Wolverhampton Staffs
Jones Esther Dau Single b1889 Domestic Servant Hemesford Staffs
Jones George Son Single b1891 Coal Miner Hewer Walsall Wood Staffs
Jones William Son Single b1893 Boot Maker Walsall Wood Staffs
Jones Sarah Dau Single b1898 Brownhills Staffs
Jones Thomas Son Single b1900 Brownhills Staffs
Jones, Florence Dau Single b1901 Brownhills Staffs
Jones Irene Dau Single b1903 Brownhills Staffs

Address High Street. Brownhills. Parish: Ogley Hay. District: Lichfield

    Hi not
I'm back to 1841 with a couple of slightly iffie options as you will find. Jones and miner seem to go together in Staffordshire.
I just can't convince myself 100% that I have it right and wanted the expert eye.
Also the 1911 parents George and Jane Pumphrey is the earliest marriage I have.

What does it say on their marriage certificate?

    Hi Coromandel
I don't have the marriage certificate as yet as my wallet will not allow.
I can confirm that George's b1857 father was Thomas also a miner.

Yes, I have Thomas's birth certificate. Pumphrey is definately right and confirmed by sister Esther staying in 1891.
We are matched so far with the census and your right, this is where it gets more tricky.
In earlier census the father Thomas seems to change to Samuel. Everything else matches well.
    See what you think.

I haven't got the 1881 census yet. The one above doesn't fit.
Can we now work the other way with using George b1856 and the 1861 census is:
RG09 2008/14/30. 7 Smith Street. Crown copyright TNA
    Thomas b1821 another coal miner
    Mary Ann b1823
    John b1847
    Noah b1851
    George b1856
    Thomas b1860
    Elisa b1861

Yes I have to agree having checked the census return on the 1871.
The slight difference in ages of Samuel and Mary threw me and Selina just isn't
a name that runs through the family.
So we're all good from 1861 to 1911. Brilliant and thanks

    1851 I have HO107 2021 655
    1841 HO107 1001 10/9 11

    Do you agree ?

If you don't have the marriage certificate of George & Jane (or find the marriage in a church register) I can't see how you will know who George's father was. There may be other crucial clues on the certificate too, e.g. names of witnesses, and addresses.

From FreeBMD I see that there's a possible marriage for George Jones and Jane Ann Pumphrey in the Wolverhampton district in the last quarter of 1882 (vol. 6b, page 873). These are the places covered by that district:

    https://www.
    ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/wolverhampton.html

By studying the page numbers for other Wolverhampton district marriages in this quarter, you may be able to narrow down where the marriage took place, in the hope that you can find the entry in a parish register and so save yourself the cost of the marriage certificate. Somewhere in another thread I explained how to do this . . . but I can't find it right now and am just about ready for bed. I'll look for it again tomorrow.

Now your getting to understand where I'm coming from.
Yes the 1861 is correct but when you go back to 1851 Thomas becomes Samuel again or so it seems.
If you check other census returns in that road you will find more Jones the miners.
So where do we go from here notanotherminer ?

Here is the thread I was going on about.

Sorry I can't help with the census searches, but I've no Ancestry/FMP at home.

Perhaps the answers will lie in the Bilston parish registers?
