1841 H0107/356/2 folio 4 p2 - Barnwood, Gloucester shows
James Workman Ag. Lab 50 with wife Elizabeth 40.
Sons: Charles 15, William 13 and Thomas 7.
Also daughters Elizabeth 18? Anne 8, Maryann 5 and Sarah 2.
1871 RG10/2610/93/44 - Wootton St. Mary, Gloucs shows:
WILLIAM Workman 44 Labourer born Barnwood, Gloucs. with wife Ann 43 (born West Port, Ireland) and children Elizabeth 5 and James 2.
1881 Canadian Census shows William & Ann with Children Elizabeth & James living at Westville, Pictou, Nova Scotia.
THOMAS Workman and wife Elizabeth are shown on 1881 Canadian Census also living at Westville, Nova Scotia.
Thomas & Elizabeth married in 1871 - Halifax, Nova Scotia(?) Canada.
CHARLES Workman 58 Miner, wife Elizabeth 46 (Nova Scotia) and son James Miner 20 (England) are also shown living at Westville, Nova Scotia on 1881 Canadian Census.
1901 Canadian Census shows Elizabeth Workman a Widow aged 66 with adopted son James living at Drummond Mines, Pictou. So was Charles married before he married Elizabeth? Can find no death for Charles.
I am trying to find when William, Thomas and Charles emigrated to Canada?
Any help or guidance would be most appreciated.
Many thanks
Sheila

Hi Sheila
I haven't been able to find any of them on passenger lists, but have some rough arrival dates.
1871 census for Halifax East shows Charles Workman (46, b. England), Elizabeth Workman (36, b. Nova Scotia), another Elizabeth Workman (17, also shown as born Nova Scotia) and James Workman (10, b. England), plus Thomas Workman (whose age I failed to copy, thirty-something). The 1901 census says James was born 27 Nov. 1860 in England. It also appears to say 1860 for the date of his arrival in Canada. On the 1911 census (by which time he's 49) his birthdate appears to have been altered from 1860 to 1861.
The 1901 census gives Thomas' date of arrival as 1864. As for William, you've found him in England on the 1871 census, but he must have left quite soon after that, for his date of arrival is given as 1871 in the 1901 census.
Arrival dates often seem to vary from one census to another and so shouldn't be taken as gospel. However, at least that gives a rough idea of when the brothers emigrated. Unfortunately the Canadian passenger lists on Ancesty don't start until 1865, probably too early for Charles & Thomas. I haven't yet spotted William on the passenger lists.

Hi Coromandel,
I'd booked in at Dudley Archives yesterday to have a look on Ancestry as it's free access but computers were down so thought I'd ask the 'BG family' for help.
I didn't realise Ancestry lists don't start until 1865 but at least you've given me some dates to consider.
I think I'll have to try and find the 'brothers' in 1861 to see if they're still here - Charles might be as his son James was born about 1860/1.
Many thanks for your help and thoughts - will keep looking
