LNER was the London and North Eastern Railway. Curiouser and curiouser, I too have railway ancestors that I am saving for a rainy day.
Sadly, our dear friend Ann (alias Ladkyis) passed away on Thursday, 26th. December, 2019.

the cap looks like it has 4 letters on starting with L.
Perhaps LMSR - London Midland & Scottish Railway. If you followed my advice in message #3 and looked up Avonmouth Railway Station in Wikipedia, you will already have found a reference to LMSR.

Thank you for your comment but please dont be so harsh, some of us find it more difficult, maybe I do not have as many brain cells!
I did follow your advice but with so little information I could not come to any conclusion. I do always appreciate the help given and always try to follow the advice where I can understand it.
