Default John INGRAM and Grace MADDER

    Hi all,

Please forgive me if I've posted this here before, but I can not find anything through the search facility.

John Ingram was born about 1785 and Grace Madder was born about 1791. They were married 1811 Diocese of Cork & Ross, county Cork, Ireland (found in Irish Records Extraction Database at ancestry.com)

John Ingram brought out settlers from Cork to South Africa in 1820 and again in 1823. He gave their ages as:
John Ingram age 35, Grace age 29, Henry 6, John 5, George 4, Jocelyn P 3, Catherine in his 1819 application.

I am hoping for more information about their birth dates, birth places, and parents i.e. anything before 1820.

    Anton Ingram

Hi Anton, and welcome to the forum

Have you seen this thread on Ancestry? :-

    http://
    boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.ingram/2985.5/mb.ashx

It gives parents for both John & Grace.

I have transcribed all the 1820 settler correspondence and the John INGRAM letters can be seen here. See also the links to his post 1820 correspondence. I was actually helped with the transcription of the Ingram letters by Graham Dickason, author of "Irish settlers to the Cape: History of the Clanwilliam 1820 settlers from Cork Harbour" (Balkema 1973) - highly recommended reading. Notice there is also a link to an 1821 letter written by a George MADDER.

Coromandel, Thanks I have seen that page. I would prefer solid information and aaastewart151 only ever posted in 2008.

Sue, Thank for your hard work in transcribing all the correspondence. I got the ages of the family members from your subscriptions.
What is your impression of John Ingram? Seems the man bit off more than he could handle.

    I found this at http://www.irelandoldnews.com/obits/obidxi.htm

INGRAM, Jocelyn Percy; ; Cork City COR IRL>Cape Town ZAF; Cork Examiner (COR IRL); 1856-8-1; dja
INGRAM, John; ; Grattan Hill COR IRL; Cork Examiner; 1846-1-7; dja

Any idea what "dja" at the end means?

Jocelyn Percy is John and Grace's 4th child. He died in Cape Town, South Africa on 21 May 1856 age:38y which fits.

I don't have any evidence that John Ingram died in South Africa, so I wonder if this could be him?
Is there a way of finding a death certificate or grave from the info supplied?

Looks to be the initials of Dennis Ahern, the transcriber
