    Default Edward/Edwin

    Hi Bud
It seems likely that Edward/Edwin confusion is due to name difference from Registration and Baptism.

Looking at Lancs OPC baptisms for St. Mary, Oldham, (transcribed up to 1850), there are a number of children of John and Elizabeth JACKSON, his occupation spinner. Most times the abode is Holebottom.
Looking at the ones that took place after civil registration began, (Joseph/William James/John/Robert/Edwin/James) and finding them on LancsBMD, the mother’s maiden name is HALL.
The one registered in 1846 is Edward JACKSON, mmn HALL, the corresponding baptism shows Edwin.

John JACKSON married Elizabeth HALL, 9 Feb 1830 at St. Mary, Oldham

I think the marriage certificate of Edward JACKSON to Alice GATTERICK, Sep 1866, will be helpful.

Thanks for the replies, the death of Edwin in Oldham is the one I spotted.
On Charles' b cert, Edwin is a Spindle Forger.
I am also hoping that surname Gatterick is an error in transcribing and it is actually Gratrix/Greatorex. I will have another go now that I have the name of possible fathers for Alice and Edwin.

I think that is most likely, or the vicar just wrote it as he heard it. According to 1881 census Alice was born in Whittington, which is in Chesterfield RD. Yet another variation, this may be her, it ties in with the age at marriage: Mar 1847, Alice GETTERIX, vol 19, p.501.
    Good luck!

    Hello again Mona
Edwin is a 'spindle forger' on the birth cert.

I think I will order that marriage cert and see what names are actually on it!

I have just received the marriage cert and I don't think I am any further forward. The only new information it gives is Edward's occupation as a 'Minder'. ??? His father John was a Spinner and her father a coke burner. Witnesses Abram and William Jackson. Alice is Gatterick as in your post further up.

    Any advice for me?

Hi Buddy,, you have proved a lot of speculation by that marriage certificate. The baptism of Edwin, registration as Edward etc. confirmation of parents of Edward/Edwin and Alice. You are a long way from the Charles JACKSON, fisherman in Grimsby, ... where did he come from?. He DID escape the cotton mills of Lancashire, as I think was the reason he went to sea according to family lore, you mentioned in an earlier post.
You now have information to go further backwards!.... Lots of fun looking for Gatterick, geterix, gratrix, greatorex in derbyshire!

Re: Occupation Minder, it was related to the cotton mills see THIS, Self-Acting Minder
