Default The illusive ancestors Michael Montague

    Hi to everyone

I am trying to put some flesh on my Fathers side of the family as, I know very little about his side of the Family as, he this was a personal request from my father so....here goes.

Am looking for any information on Michael Montague born 1796 who married, Elizabeth Elliot in 1821....need to find parents and GG parent as possible. Family lived in Middlesex...any info would be Great as, all the contributers to my previous post (Bullas) all were so generous and, helpful to which I am forever grateful.

    Thank you all

Just to start this off, from London parish registers database, there's this marriage to Rebecca ELLIOTT.

    St Mary Islington
    MARRIAGE
    11 Feb 1821
Michael Montague, bachelor, of this parish
Rebecca Elliott, spinster, of this parish
    After banns
Witnesses - Thomas Gunn, Mrs Gunn

That leads in turn to this marriage, at the same church the previous year ...

    St Mary Islington
    MARRIAGE
    18 June 1820
Thomas Gunn, bachelor, of this parish,
Mary Elliott, spinster, of this parish
    After banns
Witnesses - Michael Montagu, Reabecca Elliott

Do you think these are the right people?

Have you found them in a census?

Thanks Kerrywood it seems like they are the correct ones...I have a Thomas as his Father so far and Elizabeth as his Mum..then gets so vague provisional date for Thos is 1779 but uncertain. It would be Great if we could get further back as, my father has become obsessed with tracing back his Fathers side and, we have so much info on the rest of the family ie his mothers side. And a big thanks for responding so quickly really appreciated Have just gone through my notes and found that he was married to an Elizabeth Wilton but, not 100%

There's a bit about Michael and Rebecca here:

    http://www.
    ozigen.com/index.htm?ssmain=p39865.htm;

including an address for 1841 (City Garden Place, St Luke, Middlesex) but no reference number.

P.S. unfortunately Michael died before the 1851 census. He was buried at Islington St Mary on 2 July 1846 according to the above website.

Yes, and this couple are easily found in the 1841 census.

But laurie has said Michael's wife was Elizabeth, possibly WILTON. So it would be helpful to know if she has found them in a census.

Oops, sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick. Time for a cup of tea, I think.

Perhaps it's Thomas' wife who is thought to be Elizabeth WILTON?

Cups of tea needed all round, I think.

Powered by tea and doughnuts I have done a bit more googling in the hope of working out who Elizabeth Wilton was.

    http://www.
    lookupuk.com/newboards/view-beta.php?number=21762

is a look-up request from a descendant of an Elizabeth Mary Montague who married William Sinton at St George's, Bloomsbury, in 1820. It gives her parents as Thomas Montague and Elizabeth Wilton. It's headed 'Montague/Mountegue of Chalfont St. Peter, Bucks, and Harefield, Middlesex' but does not give details of when the family was in these places.

Harefield comes up again here, in what I think may be another posting by laurie:

    http://www.
    ancestryaid.co.uk/boards/your-family-history-brickwalls/24637-illusive-ancestors-michael-montague.html

Post #2 on that thread notes that a Michael son of Thomas and Elizabeth Montague was baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Harefield on 4 Dec 1796 (info from London Parish Registers).

The IGI has a marriage on 26 Oct 1789 at Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, for Thos. Mountegue and Eliz. Wilton.

    This leaves two big questions:

    (1) Are the Thomas and Elizabeth marrying in Chalfont St Peter the same ones who were later in Harefield?
    (2) Is the Michael baptised in Harefield the same one who married Rebecca Elliott?
