Sunday, we had the misfortune to suffer a significant water damage loss. Tuesday, we had a 2nd one, even worse than the 1st. These events were the only times we've needed our insurer's involvement in 23 years in our home
We notified the insurers who very promptly despatched clean-up crews. They tore up floors, tore down ceilngs and were back on a daily basis to check on how things were going. Today, they discovered there was more damage in the kitchen area than initially anticpiated, so now more tear out is required.
My insurance adjuster was due here at 10.00am He showed up at 11.45. He was a youngish chap - under 40 - who had previously been told that I was deaf and if I had problems with his questions to write them down. This he had no intention of doing. He also lectured me on what 'contents insurance' was and what I expected his employer to pay.
From his attitude to me today, I feel more like a 'suspect' than a 'victim'.
As a person [me] who has 40 years prior to my retirement, experience in the insurance industry, he made me feel that I wanted to curl up under a stone and not waste his time.
Is this attitude of insurers common?

I do not know Colin - never had to make a claim BUT write to the insurers and complain loudly.
State the facts, his lateness, his disregard for your disability and his downright lack of common curtesy and emphasise the hurt and distress that this one individual has caused you.
Finally do not let this ignorant person get to you - you are a far better individual than he is - just make sure that you claim every single penny that you possibly can, after all that is what you buy insurance for.

I totally agree with pennydog. Complain. Politely but firmly request another adjuster. You have paid for this and they owe you at the VERY least courtesy and value-for-money. What you have received so far was not it!

Colin this is very bad: I've made claims on several occasions and, though I have been annoyed recently to find a policy didn't live up to my expectations, I've always been treated politely. This chap sounds unusually unpleasant, and his employers won't be at all happy to find a customer has been treated in this way. Good luck with your claim - it's horrid to be treated badly when you're already trying to cope with a crisis.

I am still feeling as I did when I posted this thread yesterday. I appreciate very much the responses above, but after my wife phoned them this morning and had a long conversation, I am convinced that between now and August, the renewal date of the policy, the following will happen:
1] That at least one of our 2 losses will not be accepted as legitimate claims
and
2] A letter of non-renewal will be issued.
Regardless of what may happen, I have more pressing concerns to deal with. Last night, about 10.30 our daughter's husbabd was admitted to hospital [again] and is in Intensive Care. My wife is now with our daughter and son-in-law.
As a not very patient person, I am not dwelling on the insuance issues and to keep what resembles my sanity, I am going to post a thread about a person in my tree who would appear to have been an interesting person.
It will be on the table shortly

Colin
Thinking of you but I agree with previous comments, complain loudly and don't stop hassling them until they get things sorted.
They say things happen in 3's, well I would say you've had more than your 3's this year - it can only get better honest.
Take care
Liane
