Default What name is 'Chpr' short for?

    1824/1825 Baines Directory
    Lockey Chpr. Vict. 'Squirrel'

This is referring to the licensed victualler of the Squirrel Hotel in Anderton. The rest of the names are listed surname then first name. What is his first name?

Was this from a census record? If so, have you checked prior and later ones?

No it's from a trade directory. This is the only reference I have to him. (I'm tracing the history of a building)

Christopher seems likely, thanks everyone. The other names are only abbreviated if they are common names, e.g. Jas. I hadn't even thought of Christopher, my mind was drawing a blank!

In very old documents, e.g. wills Christopher is often shown as Xpofer. It took us a while to work this out until we compared it with Christmas - ofetn written as Xmas.

Just a thought if you haven't come across it before.
