The Times is online for a fee. You can also access it from some libraries for free.

Infotrac Custom Newspapers (via your library) has several titles running from 1980.

The Times Digital Archive goes up to 1985.

The Guardian/Observer has an online archive.

In August the British Library will begin to "go live" with the digitised newspapers. The placing of the whole of their collection will be an ongoing thing over the next few years.
Try googling British Library/newspapers and you can then find the website and sign up for the newsletter which will give you up to date informatio about progress

I believe the British Library digitisation project mentioned will not cover the 20th century. Murdoch appears to have got them running scared!

    The relevant website is here

    www.
    britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/index.php

    and this forum thread relates.

But I believe the focus is on digitising 19th-century newspapers before 20th-century ones.

A recent article can be found here

    http://www.
    guardian.co.uk/media/2011/may/30/british-library-digital-newspaper-archive
The British Library is cautious in its approach to the thorny issue of copyright, initially drawing the line at digitising post-1900 material. The "national memory" still bristles at the mention of James Murdoch, who described himself as "very, very concerned" about the library's plans in May last year. However, archiving a wealth of material from the first world war and Britain's burgeoning suffragette movement remains the ambition.
