Could someone kindly look at the 1861 census for me Ref RG9 1255 30 17. Address - Yard, Pilot Street, St Margaret, Kings Lynn.
The first name on the page is John Bailey my 2 x gt grandfather but I am unable to identify where he was born.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It looks like 'Royal nr ?Sleaford' - but that doesn't seem to make much sense. Certainly looks like Royal, though. FMP has it as Kennythorpe, but that's in Yorkshire.

Thank you for that. I thought it may say Stamford but I couldn't tie in the "Royal" bit!

I thought it might have been Royal Thorpe (2 words) but no such place exists. There's a Kingthorpe in Lincolnshire which is near Market Rasen but it doesn't look much like that either.

No, it doesn't look like a K, if you compare it with the K of King's Lynn below.

It definitely looks like Royal something though doesn't it. I've ploughed through gazeteers and still no luck. Many thanks.

There’s a very clear image on “The Genealogist” site and it appears to read ‘Lincolnshire, Royal nr Stamford”. I suspect this is RYHALL.

How about Royal nr Stamford. Perhaps Royal is a mangling of Ryhall. Ryhall is on the border of Lincs and Rutland as far as I can make out.
Edit: his birth place is recorded as Lincoln.S.Stampford (sic) in the 1851 census.

Thank you everyone. I shall work on Rhyall for the time being. Didn't think of that one!
