I'm looking for a burial and have been told by the Exeter Council that I would probably find the information there, (which is kinda difficult seeings I am in Australia).

Why don't you email the Devon Family History Society with your request? Alternatively, google Genuki plus the relevant town/village to see if there is an OPC (online parish clerk) for the area. The OPCs are excellent, and will email you the results.
Or tell us who you are looking for!Thomasin

Do you have the death certificate (which would specify the exact date) or do you mean December quarter 1847, which is an entirely different kettle of fish?
If it's in the December quarter then Thomas could have actually died anytime between about 28 September (think you have officially 5 days in which to register the death) and 31 December. Burial therefore could have been any time between 1 October 1847 and about 5 January 1848. (Burial should not have taken place before the death was registered, but I have a feeling that I have one person from about that time who was buried before the death had been registered.)
If you do have the death certificate, then the date of death, plus the place, and the sub-district in which it was registered would all help in narrowing down the search from a possible 24 parishes to a more likely 3 or 4. http://www.

I presume that you mean the Thomas Dutton who in 1841 was "aged 80" (i.e. between 80 and 84) and living in St Sidwell's parish, Exeter? If you don't have the death certificate, then St Sidwell's burial PRs might be a good place for Raaa to start looking.

I think the person who offered to go the record office for you would like to know the parish in which the man died (column 1 on the certificate)sub district, Saint SidwellPeter Goodey

In fairness, Peter, although I did ask alliejaye for the place of death in an attempt to narrow down the possible parish of burial, the parish is not always named in the place of death column.
I have an 1887 death certificate for Great Yarmouth (Norfolk) which just says Row 11, U.S.D.
If someone died in the workhouse/infirmary, that wouldn't necessarily indicate the parish where they might be buried.
Going on his parish of residence in 1841 and the sub-district in which the death was registered I would almost have bet my life on Thomas being buried in St Sidwell's. Good job I didn't as Hollytree found him buried in St Bartholomew's New Cemetery.
