Family Search, mentioned previously, is the new updated facility on what most people still call the IGI. The European page of Family Search is here.

There are many free sites and what's best depends really on what records you're looking for. For births, deaths and marriages in England and Wales you need FreeBMD, an alternative source of parish records is FreeReg and for census records you have Family Search and FreeCen.

If you google any of the above you should find them without too much trouble.

Can I ask please whether you're familiar with the Family History Centres? I was worried by your comment that you might be confusing them with the County Records Offices which generally do only hold records for their own county.

Family History Centres are run by the Mormons who also set up and own the IGI. All extracted records on their website should have a source film No. which relates to the record. This film will usually be either the original parish records or the Bishops Transcripts. They can be ordered in by Film No. at any Family History Centre.

If you go to their "Find a Family History Centre" page (click here) and enter England and Devon it will then show you address and contact details for the centres in Plymouth and Exeter.

Lincolnshire Archives are currently putting online many of their parish registers, so to find the marriage of Sarah and Joseph http://www.
    lincstothepast.com/
In the search box type in Metheringham PAR/1 which should bring up the parish registers for Methingham.
Second thumbnail should refer to marriages 1813-1837.
Click on image 3 (select from the 'overhead' image numbers) to confirm the register is for Metheringham, and then select image 12.

Lincolnshire Family History Society in their 'old' marriage index for Graffoe deanery (all the marriage indexes are in the process of being re-indexed with additional information) has Sarah's name as Oughtbee.

In the 1851 and 1861 census Sarah is said to have been born in Scothern.
To search for her baptism, same website as before, but this time search for Scothern PAR/1.
You need the General Register 1734 -1812. found on page 2 of the search results.

Prior to 1813, in a lot of parishes the baptisms and burials were entered in one register and so you have to sort one from t'other. The good thing is that the pages are usually headed 'baptisms' or 'burials', but the bad news is that baptisms 1800 are probably on the opposite page to burials 1797.
Although Sarah's age is consistent in the census to give her a birth year of 1805, I would check the baptisms for possibly 1802 onwards so start on image 79. As well as looking for Sarah herself, look at the other surnames on the pages, as I've not heard of the surname Oughtbee before, nor is it in the list of surnames in Lincs FHS publications, so I'm fairly certain that the vicar either misheard Sarah or else just couldn't spell what she did say. (You have to think in terms of phonetic spelling, plus or minus an H in front!)

If you want to look at the names in publications list on the LFHS site, go to www.http://
lincolnshirefhs.org.uk/NameIndexes/PubsNameIndex-A.htm, and select the letter O, though names beginning with H might also be worth a look, plus A if you think of Autby/Autbee.

Of course someone's alleged birthplace is not necessarily either their birthplace or the place where they were baptised. Lincs FHS are in the process of transcribing baptisms and burials 1754-1812 for all the deaneries. Latest one completed is Holland East, so it will probably be a couple of years before Lawres (for Scothern and surrounding villages) gets published, though of course, in the meantime you could always check other parishes via the Lincs Archives website. (If you type PAR/1 after the name of a place you get just the parish registers.)
