Default CATHERINE ISABELLA WARD NEE GARNETT

This post links the data posted on "Crawcour family history -synopsis" with specific reference to the Ward/Crawcour relationships.
The earlier posts 1 and 3 on this thread show that by the 1851 census Edward Crawcour alias Cartwright was living with Catherine Isabella Ward nee Garnett and some of her children plus the two children of Edward Crawcour - namely John Isaac and Helen Semira known as Ellen.
Edward's first wife Margaret Buchanan 1798-1840 had died some years earlier aged 42.
The Morning Post Sat March 1 1845 records that Edward Crawcour was living with his 'wife' Catherine at 21 Castleman Villas Barnes. He was described as of the " Hebrew persuasion" and Catherine " a lady considerably older than the prosecutor". Edward had taken his footman to court alleging he had opened sealed letters. In the court case Catherine was described as employing the servant in Edinburgh prior to her 'marriage".
I have been unable to find any such marriage and suspect that Catherine and Edward were never married.
This suspicion appears to be confirmed by the death record of Catherine in 1869.
The Morning Post Thurs June 3 1869
On the 31st ult at 12 Aldridge Road Villas West Bourne Park- Catherine Isabella relict of the Rev. G Ward Chaplain at Bareilly, in the Bengal Presidency age 74.

When Edward Crawcour died in 1865 at 2 Buckingham Terrace Kensington his death certificate does not record his wife's name nor any direct family relation present at his death ( I hold a copy of his Death certificate ). I cannot locate his will and the probate of Catherine gives her surname as Ward.

It appears that Edward and Catherine met sometime between 1840-1844 in Edinburgh which is where Edward had been living. His wife Margaret is buried in Edinburgh. Edward is buried at Balls Pound Jewish Cemetery.
It appears that Edward and Catherine may have separated prior to Edward's death.

Default EDWARD CRAWCOUR - TOMBSTONE 1865

See Cemetery Scribes Person ID 19168 for the Tombstone of Edward Crawcour died 1865 born 1813- Balls Pond Jewish Cemetery. The 1845 newspaper account would indicate that Edward was abt 32 years old whereas Catherine Isabella Ward his 'wife' was about 51. Edward was only 27 when his first wife died and she was again older than Edward. Where Edward met Catherine is unknown but it appears she was in the UK pre 1845 and living in Edinburgh pre her 'marriage' to Edward according to the newspaper account.

Default EDWARD CRAWCOUR-CATHERINE WARD NEE GARNETT

The complexity of the relationship between Edward Crawcour alias Cartwright and Catherine Isabella Ward nee Garnett can be further seen in the 1861 Census. The spelling of the Crawcour surname has been incorrectly transcribed as "Crammond" on Ancestry Com site.
    RG9 88 142 3 (Crown Copyright,TNA) 32 Acacia Road Witton Lodges Marylebone
Edward Crawcour H Widower 49 Un Nill b London
John Crawcour son U 26 Dentist b Westminster
Kate Ward visitor 60 Housekeeper b Lincolnshire, Bain
Kate Hyam visitor ( niece has been deleted) 20 b London

This census record gives a clear indication that Kate Ward and Catherine Isabella Ward nee Garnett are one in the same person. The 1851 census has the birth location of Catherine the same as Kate. However, Catherine was born in 1794 but given the previous issues relating to the adoption of an alias surname of Cartwright and the adoption of Ward by Catherine at the time of her death in 1869 it seems that she and Kate are the same person. It is also clear that for whatever reason Edward and Catherine/Kate never married.

See the BG Jewish roots posting on Helen Semira Wilkie nee Crawcour who was the daughter of Edward.

    Default ROBERT WARD-MARY ANN ASTILL

This posts is a follow up to earlier posts -See Crawcour family history-synopsis in which data was posted relating to the children of Catherine Isabella Ward nee Garnett and the Rev George Ward. Catherine Isabella Ward has not Jewish roots but is associated with Edward Crawcour through their relationship as 'husband and wife'. There is no current proof that they ever married although they lived together and the terms 'husband and wife' were used in census as well as court trials previously posted on in this thread. Catherine and three of her children lived with Edward Crawcour and his two children.
Robert Ward the eldest of the three children had a military career - see the last posts regarding Robert Ward and his death plus those of his son George Arthur Ward died 1894 which appear on the Crawcour Family history - synopsis.
The family trees on Ancestry Com have incomplete data on Robert Ward and his children- this post fills in some of the gaps.
The Baptism entries for three of Robert Ward's children appear as follows:
St. Michael's Church Coventry Warwickshire- Catherine Isabella Ann Ward b 10 Jan 1863 baptised 5 July 1865;Robert Charles Astill Ward b 4 March 1864 baptised 5 July 1865;Emma Elizabeth Jane Astill Ward b 26 July 1865
Father Robert Ward Lieutenant Riding Master 3rd Dragoon Guards and Mary Ann Ward. Robert had married Mary Ann Maria Magdalena Astill on 13 Feb 1862 St Michael's Church Coventry.
Family trees show a Rhoda Ward daughter b 1865 but there is no record of a birth between 1865-1867 on Free BMD.
In his suicide note in 1894 George Arthur Ward referred to his sister as Emmy and also stated he had other brothers and sisters. George Ward brother of Robert and William was also confirmed as George Arthur's uncle.

Default ROBERT WARD-MARY ANN ASTILL 1871 CENSUS

    The 1871 Census RG10 817 88 2 ( Crown Copyright,TNA) Aldershot, Hampshire Prince of Wales 3rd Dragoon Guards
    R Ward M 44 Riding Master b Little Hertford,Herts

    Catherine dau 7 b Coventry
    Robert C son 6 b Coventry

Jane dau 2 and a half b Coventry

There are references in several family trees to Rhoda Ward born England living in Iowa in the 1880 US Census with parents Robert and Mary with a dob about 1865. However, the baptism records of the above children indicate that this is not the same Robert Ward nor was he a farmer as indicated in the Census records.

    Default Edward crawcour alias Cartwright

    Dear Phillip and Kerrywood,
Thank you for all your help with my WARD family( Captain Robert Ward 3rd Royal Dragoon Guards who committed suicide in 1882 in West Meath)
I have found a son of the missing family, Robert Charles Astill WARD who emigrated in1887/8 to Vancouver Island, via Quebec on the 'Circassian' ,married, had family of 3 sons , two of whom came to F/F in CEF in WW1 and returned safely.
Unfortunately the ship's passenger list had no UK home address.I will furnish all details if of interest.
but still not found Captain WARD's widow or children. The Coroner signed the death certificate as informant so no leads there.

I wonder to help your search if you were to place a new thread on the Ward/Astill lines which is separate from the Edward Crawcour thread and posts which is essentially Jewish. You might want to consider Warwickshire as a possible county post or Canada for Robert Charles. This would give you a wider coverage. At present looking at the various family trees on the Ward/Astill lines there is no one who has developed data beyond the marriage of Mary and Robert and even then some have got wrong data. I have seen the Canadian Census data for Robert and think you should post it but as suggested on a separate new thread. With regard to what happened to Mary post Robert's death is unknown but did she re-marry hence us not being able to locate her. Did she move abroad or settle in Ireland? Nothing emerges from current data as yet.
    What do you think?
