A couple more for you (I think I’ve now eliminated all of my typos.) It's jolly good for you that your ancestor didn't play quite by the book and so made it into the papers for you to read about many years later.

This next one looks like an undercover operation.

    LOCAL INTELLIGENCE
DISORDERLY BEERSELLERS SUPRISED. -- On the 21st instant four additional policemen were sworn in. Their debut was amongst the beersellers, and at the Guildhall on Tuesday last, the first fruits of their day's labour were ---
John North, Guildhall Tavern beerhouse, was fined 1s. and 8s. costs for permitting gaming with dominoes in his house ; John Flinn, Shamrock beerhouse, Castlegate was fined the same amount for a similar offence ; John Fawcett and William Richardson, beersellers, were also fined 1s. and 8s. costs each, for committing a similar offence on the 22nd. The new policemen being unknown, sat in the defendant's houses and witnessed the gaming.

The Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser, Wednesday, December 31, 1853; pg. 5

    HUDDERSFIELD
PUBLIC HOUSE GAMBLING. -- On Saturday, at the Huddersfield Guildhall, John North, beer-house keeper, Milnsbridge, was charged with allowing gambling in his house on the previous Saturday night. Superintendent Heaton went into the house about ten o'clock, and in the middle room saw some men playing cards. He fetched North to look at them also, and then the men, who up to that time had no idea that Mr. Heaton had seen them playing, gave up the game. North, in defence, said the men were playing at dominoes not cards, but the Magistrates gave no credence to his statement, and fined him 20s. and 9s. expenses.

The only item I could find relating to your original query was this one…

    INSOLVENT DEBTORS' COURT
    YORK CASTLE, MONDAY, JULY 30.
    Before J. Arnould, Esq., Deputy-Judge
    UNOPPOSED CASES. ---
    [Long list of names]...

    John North, beer-house keeper, Huddersfield

    [a few more names]...

...were unopposed and ordered to be discharged forthwith.

The York Herald, Saturday, August 04, 1855; pg. 4

Also spotted this much earlier one - relating to the granting or refusing of licenses...

    BREWSTER SESSIONS
The general annual meeting for the granting and renewing of licenses was held on Thursday last, in the Guildhall when the following magistrates were present:- Jos. Armitage (in the chair), B. N. R. Batty, W. W. Battye, Joseph Brook, Joseph Charlesworth, Joshua Morehouse, J. Starkey, and T. J. Fisher, Esqs.
There were notices given for 28 new licenses, of which five were granted, 17 refused, and four adjourned. John North, Victoria-street, Huddersfield, failed to appear, and John Rhodes, Westgate, Lindsey was absent. .....

The Huddersfield Chronicle and West Yorkshire Advertiser, Saturday, August 23, 1851

NOTE: this article continues for a quite a while, going into who was granted or refused a license, but there's no further mention of John North, since he didn't turn up.

John North is also mentioned in 1854 in an article titled The Huddersfield Beerseller's Protective Society. The report waffles on rather a bit (it's a meeting about the trade interests of beersellers) and would take a wee while to transcribe. Would you like this one or have you had enough?

Funnily enough for a cat, I'm rather fond of the Mutley hound and think she's absolutely ace. Methinks I've downed too much tonight and am tending towards soppiness. EEk! Hiccupp.

Hi Peter. I enjoyed reading about your ancestor and his misdemeanours. The items were found by searching through the British Library's 19th Century British Newspapers collection, provided online by the Gale database.

Are you a library member? If so, check with your library to see if they have a subscription to this collection, (if not then consider joining a library that does.) Then you may be able to access the collection yourself online from your home, using your library membership.
